Verwacht live-sets, muziek, interviews, experimenten, geluiden, stilte, voordrachten, archiefmateriaal, etc.

The Death of ArtScience
📅 June 1st - 9th 2026
🫀Come support us and spread the word!

🗞️ What happened?

On 18 May 2026, the management of KABK and KC decided to dissolve the ArtScience Interfaculty as of 1 September. The BA is being absorbed into Fine Art as one of three "tracks." The MA is being moved to the KC. The structure that connected both schools - the structure students enrolled in - is gone.

We found out from a portal post.
Written by the Head of Marketing. Not by our department head or by the director. Not even in a meeting.
This is not just about ArtScience: this is how decisions get made at institutions. If they can dissolve a 35-year interfaculty in one meeting then this is something that affects us all. To protest this ArtScience will turn the KABK and KC into our festival ground. It will feature artworks, workshops, presentations, concerts and more.

📢 Stay tuned in for more!

🫂 If you’d like to support us in any other way don’t hesitate to reach out!

Please sign the petition to preserve innovation and experimentation! (link in bio)

KABK is discontinuing the structure of the most open, interdisciplinary, and experimental art education program in the Netherlands. In 2026. The students have organized themselves to oppose this rupture. Together with the professionals from the field, they have written a petition to start a constructive dialogue with Hogeschool der Kunsten (HdK), and composed a list of demands that we believe would secure a better education in the continuation of the ArtScience Interfaculty.

ArtScience bridges the gap between several fields of education, being a unique study collaboration between The Royal Conservatoire (KC), The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and Leiden University. For the past 35 years, it has nurtured interdisciplinary artists whose practices sit at the intersections of art, science and technology.
The contributions to the field are widely recognized, not only for the innovative creative practices, but for fostering communal structures and organizations that are of great significance to Dutch contemporary art and beyond.

As of the 18th of May KABK, decided to dissolve the ArtScience Interfaculty structure without consultation, without transparency, without care for the students currently enrolled.

This is not an isolated incident. This is how institutions operate when no one is watching. Budgets get cut, programs get merged, and the things that are the hardest to explain, the experimental, the interdisciplinary, the inventive, are the first to go. Not because they lack value, but because they  aren’t easy to label. And once they are gone, you won’t notice immediately, until you look up ten years later and wonder why everything feels the same, why no one is taking risks, why the field stopped surprising you. That is what is at stake here. Not just one program. The conditions that make innovation possible at all. by @artscience.interfaculty

We are VERY proud to announce that Finn Stevenhagen, ArtScience Alumnus of 2023, has been nominated for a Gouden Kalf for Best Digital Culture Production 2026 at the @nederlandsfilmfestival for his work Graves’ End!

Graves’ End is an expanded cinema installation, a fictional story set in 1349 on the Isle of Man. We witness the plague arriving on the island through the eyes of a pubescent boy, full of shame for his own sexual awakening.
Through allegory Graves’ End explores the themes of false deities, masculinity, dogmatism, isolation, the erosion of human agency, and radicalisation.

We are rooting for you tonight!!!! 🎊🎊🎊 by @artscience.interfaculty

The Dance in Flow

This work explores the fascinating relationship between physical phenomena and human perception. Through the interplay of moving water and light, the work reveals a series of mesmerising visuals that appear to challenge the logic of what we see.

Both hypnotic and contemplative, the work offers a moment to slow down, observe, and experience the quiet beauty of a world that feels, for an instant, slightly beyond comprehension.

8 HOURS. DIRECTORS OFFICE. ARTSCIENCE INTERFACULTY.

4 July 12:00-20:00

35 years of this Interfaculty are being dismantled quietly. We’re doing the opposite of quiet, we’re curating chaos, we’re are presenting ‘Wait, what even is ArtScience?’

The Saturday of the Grad show, we’re taking over the KABK director’s office and not leaving for eight straight hours. Expect: live readings of Academy of Senses, music , lights, films, and anything you want to do, conversations with students, updates, anything we can think of. Walk in, walk out, walk in again.

This is for everyone: current students, alumni who built this place before us, professionals who’ve worked with ArtScience grads, professors, strangers off the street, anyone who’s ever asked “wait, what even IS ArtScience?” Come find out. Come tell us what it meant to you. Come argue with us. Come sit in silence with us.

ArtScience is here. And we are NOT going anywhere.
2 July, 17:00
KABK Hallways
Good for Nothing / Niksnut by Ilva Nieuwstraten @vanilla_alien : A collective act of doing nothing, because apparently that’s all it takes for a 35-year programme to get erased.

No real consultation. Students left hanging since October with nothing but empty promises. 1100+ signatures and counting. We are in conversation with the directorate of KABK (not KC), but still have demands left on the table:
1. Reconsideration of the decision to merge ArtScience with Fine Arts
2. Reconsideration of the decision to dissolve the Interfaculty
3. Hiring a head for the ArtScience bachelor with appropriate competencies and experience
4. Transparent decision-making
5. A genuine conversation about the program’s future

So we’re showing up. All of us. Standing still, standing together.

When we find new postures in relation to technologies, is this an extension of self or an intrusion? Is the body being liberated or erased? How could restriction translate into expansion? And, At what point adaptation becomes surrender?
