Toyin was a passionate person. She was a light in human form. A gift from God. I want people to know that she is more than just her story. She brought so much laughter and love towards me and our circle of friends. I wanted to incorporate her essence into this painting by depicting a euphoric pink, blue and purple sky. I also painted two butterfly’s to represent her spirit living on.

I’m happy to say that I found peace while creating this painting. This was my gift to her and my way of finding closure. Thank you for everything you brought to us. You will live forever in our hearts. I love you. ❤️ Say her name, Oluwatoyin Salau.

“Nothing Like Lovers Dreams”
Oil on Canvas
30” x 40”

In this piece I depict two partners during the process of them moving out of their college dorm. These two individuals are both coming from different living situations, one of them being from a different state and the other from a different country, ultimately uniting in a state they studied in.

I wanted to explore the ways people build a sense of belonging through instability and uncertainty. The dorm they’re standing in that acts as a threshold between the life they’re leaving behind and whatever awaits them in the future. When I took the reference photograph, I found myself positioned as a witness from the outside of the door, looking into their reality. This moment for me challenged the idea of what a home is and how it manifests throughout our daily lives. How home can feel constant for some and liminal for others. It can reveal itself as a physical entity or live within feelings of belonging. by @artsmind
