Aqui y Alla- Now Showing at @blackwallsgallery

Lawrence, Massachusetts has always been a city shaped by migration. Today, its identity is inseparable from its Dominican, Puerto Rican, and wider Caribbean roots.

Aquí y Alla brings together Lawrence artists Christian Rodriguez, Wilfred Acosta, Chelsea Marrero, David Santana, and Michelle Collado-all children of the diaspora whose relationships to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic come not only through heritage, but through time lived and spent on the islands themselves.

Across painting, drawing, portraiture, memory, and place, the exhibition explores what it means to create while belonging to both worlds at once.
Rather than separating “here” from “there,” Aquí y Allá considers what happens when the two become part of the same lived experience.
For the first time, these five Lawrence artists come to Boston together-representing their city, their individual practices, and the cultures their families carried into it.

“This Is Home” - Alex J. Brien @Sawro
Four years. Dozens of youth voices. One shared vision of community.
The North Canal mural project “This Is Home” for the Squashbusters Center and LCW Affordable Housing Complex on Island Street is complete! —-
“We walk on paths sowed and planted by the ancestors of our cultures. The youth are the seeds that shape the future, grown from the wisdom of those who came before us. Lawrence is a city rooted in heritage, hope, creativity, and freedom. There is a beauty and triumph that flows from this place. We are here, this is home, this is Lawrence.”

“This is Home” was Co-designed by @sawro & @awilthatwill , and born from a 2024 workshop series led by @algorythma_ and @Natburner_ alongside paid youth participants from @elevated_thought @movementcity @groundworklawrence and @squashbusters

The mural left features Ramona, aka Doña Ra— the Abuela of @hechoporcela , who’s visits “always nourished the spirit of the island within us; chicken soup for the soul, asopao edition. Una cibaeña, humilde, valiente, dispuesta para ayudar a los demás. My grandmother’s prayers have held and protected me over the years, and I hope this mural can do the same for our city”

The mural right features @itz.adebaby - alumni and visual artist intern with Elevated Thought. The portrait is not just a moment of thought & reflection, but a journey, and the power in youth voice and story sharing. A reminder of what happens when young people are given space to create, lead, and be seen.

The murals are rooted in place, pride, conversation, and possibility. It’s a reflection of home. A place we create, not just the place we reside.

“for us, the word modular parallels community: interchangeable, individual pieces that function alone, but that together form a greater whole.” 🫂

during our last event before our hiatus we asked folks how mod has impacted them.

it was refreshing and beautiful to listen through these kind words.

how has mod impacted you?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CURVY30!!!! 🎉🌸😭 AAaaaahhhhh!!! What a time!!!! 😆

I said YES to the address on January 17, 2025, followed by our grand opening on May 10th, and NOW it’s been ONE FULL YEAR!! That is CRAZY!!!! WOW how time flies!!!!😱

I’m immensely grateful for so many things, especially our beautiful community!!! 😭 I LOVE YOU GIRLS SO MUCH! Thank you God for continuously blessing our home 💕 for providing everyone with a space where they can do, say, and be WHO THEY WANT! A place where we can freely dance, laugh, CRY, but most importantly, GROW and excel in the things we once thought was impossible🥹

Thank you God for gifting me the ability to CHANGE LIVES! There’s not one single day where I’m not grateful for what we have and can do for others 🫶🏼🙏😭

Thank you to everyone for their love and support!! I was 100% not able to do this without you!! I love you girls so much!!!!🥹

I have SO MUCH MORE to say and SO MANY more people to thank specifically on another post but for now let’s take a moment to say: HAPPY BIRTHDAY CURVY30!!!!! 🙏💕🎉

“Checking in”
Remember dreams only when you sleep
Now dreams are only thing I see
All I needed was a sign, like a green light
Never short on self belief
A healthy mental is the key to life
Cup half full if you ask me
Most things don’t change overnight
Out of spite, never losing stride
I’m good in any place or weather
tryna feel free forever,
Like happy ever after
Got fly off the strength
Jap denim with the evisu print
Saw it all align
Understanding the pace of things
I feel joy, bracing for new beginnings
Giving a chance to reflect
Chose to remain focus ~yzoc
*last 5 months*
Ps. Happy birthday to me🎈
