ARTSwego, bringing the arts to campus at SUNY Oswego
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Announcing our 2026-2027 Performing Arts Series!

The series will kick off with Magdalen, a layered, one-woman play inspired by the true stories of the women and girls who labored in one of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries, exploring a shameful and largely unknown period of a history. In November, we'll welcome Kings Return, a dynamic four-piece vocal group who take pride in crafting a diverse yet supremely cohesive a cappella sound, mixing R&B, gospel, jazz, and bright bursts of pop. In February, we'll welcome Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance, a dance company that merges science and art to explore our relationship with the environment and to advocate for climate justice and a more equitable future. The season will close with Liminal Blue, an site-specific animation about Lake Ontario created by transdisciplinary artist Isabel Beavers. The animation will be projected onto a waterscreen on Glimmerglass Lagoon during the month of April.

We are so thrilled to bring these incredible artists to campus this year! Use the link in bio for more details and to reserve your tickets.

Full list of dates:

The Appliance Department opens tonight! Written by SUNY Oswego Professor Dr. Bella Poynton, this show has given students the vital experience of working on a theatrical production alongside a living playwright.

The play, which focuses on three Robot Companions (RCs), in a department store, encourages the audience to think deeply about artificial intelligence, consciousness, and ultimately, what it means to be human.

See the show October 14th-17th at 7:30pm, or October 17th-18th at 2pm. Tickets are FREE for SUNY Oswego students. Link in bio for more info. by @artswego

Join Tyler Art Gallery and the Student Art Exhibition Committee to celebrate the opening of the 64th Annual Juried Student Exhibition!

Featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital art, animation, and more, the exhibition celebrates the diverse perspectives of SUNY Oswego students. Together their voices push the boundaries of creativity, confront social issues, explore self-expression, and reflect a deep appreciation of the environment.

This exhibition honors SUNY Oswego's student-driven focus by presenting an exhibit that is entirely for students — and by students. The project empowers students to select the jurors, support gallery operations, and assist in installing the exhibition. The exceptional talents of the student body are showcased at every level.

Stop by Tyler Art Gallery on Friday, October 16th between 5 and 7PM for the opening! This event is free and open to all.

The exhibition will be on view through November 13th.

RESCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER. The Iron Pour and Cyanotype Workshop will take place Monday, October 19th. The Pit Fire will take place on Tuesday, October 20th.

This year's Festival of Fire is going to be bigger and better than ever! Not only will the event feature the annual Iron Pour, but there will also be a Ceramics Pit Fire and a Create Your Own Cyanotype Workshop.

Let's break these activities down a little further: Pit-firing is the oldest form of firing pottery and ceramics. Clay pots and sculptures are placed into a pit in the ground, and a bonfire is created over it and sustained throughout the day. The fire vitrifies the ceramics and creates interesting and unpredictable surface decoration.

During the Iron Pour, recycled scrap iron is heated to nearly 2,500 degrees until it is liquified. Then, the liquid iron is poured into molds to create new and original sculptures and designs. Scratch plates, a means to easily created iron plaques, will be available for anyone who would like to have their own idea or design cast in iron.

In the Create Your Own Cyanotype Workshop, participants will create their own cyanotype prints on fabric using sunlight and iron-based photographic chemistry.

Everyone is invited to join the fun, watch the process, and create something new this Friday, October 16th! All activities will take place in the Tyler Pit, located outside of Tyler Hall. See the full schedule of events below.

10am to 5pm: Ceramics Pit Fire
12pm to 5pm: Create Your Own Cyanotype
1pm to 5pm: Iron Pour and Scratch Plate Activity

Tomorrow's Living Writers Series author visit will not only including a reading, but a sustainability march as well!

Poet and artist Éireann Lorsung will lead us in a procession that celebrates the native plants of our region, as well as our own embodiment. She says, "I am invested in spending the limited time I have on earth being *alively* on earth with the people in front of me."

At SUNY Oswego, she will create *aliveliness* by embodying a poem with our students and taking that poem through campus as part of her Procession for SUNY Oswego. She is the author of four books of poetry, including Music for Landing Planes By, Her book, The Century, and Pattern Book. She has won numerous awards and was a National Endowment for the Arts fellow. She works with images, objects, movements, and texts and teaches at the University of South Dakota.

Join the conversation and the fun tomorrow, October 12th at 3PM in MCC 132. This event is free and open to all. We'll see you there! A social media flier for this event in the Living Writers Series. by @artswego

The arts can offer space to grapple with what it means to be human and to envision pathways for social justice.

Join the English & Creative Writing Department and the Latino & Latin American Studies Department for Poetry and Justice, a two-part series that explores how poets harness the power of language to articulate their own consciousness of experience and craft narratives that examine who is allowed to “speak” and under what conditions.

Part one of this two-poet series will host former Springfield, MA poet laureate María Luisa Arroyo to explore the importance of poetry for raising awareness of social injustices and community healing. She will share from her landmark "Gathering Words/Recogiendo Palabras" to consider how the language we use can shape understandings of domestic violence and resilience.

Stop by Marano Campus Center, Room 323 on Wednesday, October 7 from 1:50pm to 2:45pm to hear from María! Free and open to all.

Join the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures for a conversation with scholar Anastasia Valecce! While on campus, Anastasia will present her forthcoming book Disobedient Women: Decolonial Movements of Afro-Queer Puerto Rican Artists.

The book examines how Caribbean artists use artistic practice as a form of resistance against colonial, racial, and gendered structures. Her presentation will highlight Afro-queer expression, feminist resistance, visual culture and the politics of visibility, while considering how artistic practices in Puerto Rico connect with broader movements challenging patriarchy, heteronormativity and colonial legacies.

Stop by MCC 132 on Monday, October 5th from 5 to 7PM to join in on this fascinating and vital conversation. Free and open to all.

A little R&B, a little jazz, a little pop, and a whole lot of soul.

Kings Return is coming to campus! This four-piece vocal group takes pride in crafting a diverse yet supremely cohesive sound. The blend of their unique vocal timbres is so rich and so smooth that, at times, it sounds more like a full choir than four men. They take full advantage of the genre-mixing aspects of a cappella music. Their brand of R&B is entwined with free moments of jazz, soulful bursts of gospel, and bright touches of pop—all built on a solid, classical foundation. Composed of tenor Vaughn Faison, bass Gabe Kunda, tenor JE McKissic, and baritone Jamall Williams, the Dallas-based quartet has since captured the hearts of millions of fans in-person and online.

Opening numbers will be performed by the Oswego High School Chamber Singers and the Oswego State Singers.

This event is FREE for SUNY Oswego students and students K-College; link in bio for tickets.

This project was made possible with support from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to be a catalyst for change to enhance the quality of life in Oswego County.
