Reposting one of my favorite Halloween illustrations from my early days as an illustrator, back when I had a little more time to create just for the fun of it. 🎃✨

I made these cute-but-not-scary, little paper puppets for my four-year-old hoping to get her into the Halloween spirit. They were so much fun to make that I’m thinking about making some more. 🎃

(Sadly, though, I think I’m having more fun with them than my daughter is.)

Today’s my birthday! Grateful for another year around the sun and another year to don on my witch’s hat. 🎃

I created this little witch last year but didn’t get a chance to post her. Happy to do so today. ✨

Wonderful new picture book out now…

I recently attended a picture book launch. The book, Daddy is Cleaning is a really sweet heart-warming day-in-the-life-of story about a loving father and child. It’s aimed at toddlers who are just beginning to talk.

Beautifully written by debut author @angeldike with lively illustrations by Ebony Glenn @artsyebby , the launch was held @pickledpepperbooks and @mumscakeslondon provided the delicious cupcakes.

Until recently, diverse stories like this were rare. It’s refreshing to see a book that let’s children see themselves reflected in the pages while celebrating those wonderful active fathers in such a fun way. 📚❤️

Published by @nosycrow, Daddy is Cleaning is available in both hardback and paperback. by @artsyebby

HELPING DADDY

Written by Angel Dike @angelkdike
Illustrated by Ebony Glenn @artsyebby

Ages: 2 – 5

Daddy and his little one are having a busy day! First up is laundry, all washed and dried and neatly folded in the basket. Daddy’s just folding one more shirt . . . . Baby wants to do laundry too! Wait! What does Daddy see? All of his laundry is tossed about! Now what? “Daddy is cleaning.” Next, “Daddy is cooking.” His tiny helper says, “Me too!” and in no time is surrounded by spilled macaroni while the cat is dusted in flour. What’s a dad to do? “Daddy is cleaning.”

After eating—and cleaning—it’s time to head outside. Dad digs gently in the garden while his youngster gives the plants a muddy watering. Then comes . . . cleaning. No busy day is complete without a bubble bath, and a good . . . laugh. As the day comes to an end, it’s time to share a story and a sweet, sleepy, “Night, night, Daddy.”

Angel Dike’s debut picture book is a charmer with breezy storytelling that brims with the unstated particulars of chores that individual readers can amusedly supply from their own experiences. Her perfect pacing of the repeated phrasing “Daddy is . . . / “Me too!” / “Daddy is cleaning” will bring eager giggles from little ones and appreciative chuckles from adults. Dike’s segue to bath time provides a clever, heartwarming twist to this pattern, and as story time leads to sleep, adults will again acknowledge this nighttime routine with a swelling heart.

Ebony Glenn’s endearing father-child dynamic will have you smiling throughout this sweet book. Her impish toddler just wants to be like Dad, with varying degrees of success but always with fervent enthusiasm. Dad is bemused, alert, patient, playful, and always caring. Adults will empathize as his eyes droop while his little one’s remain wide open. But there’s one more hug waiting when his baby finally drifts off. Glenn’s lovely pages contain plenty of homey details to point out while leaving room for kids to talk about their own homes.

I remember the first onesies I bought
when you were still in my belly,

and the first time I held
all five pounds of you in my arms.

When you first lifted your head on your own,
and your very first crawl.

When you took your first steps,
stumbled—yet unshaken—
and got right back up again.

When you wore the little crown hat
on your very first birthday,
and frowned at the applesauce cake I made.

When you found joy in your first tutu,
felt proud to use the potty all by yourself,
and even prouder becoming a big kid.

You’re not a baby anymore,
and there’s no more need for onesies.

But you know what?

You will always be my baby girl,
and I will never outgrow these memories.

……

It’s true what they say: the days are long, but the years are short. ❤️

It’s been a while since I’ve made art to share, and I couldn’t pass up making something for #Mermay.

Also, I have a desire to put my feet in the sand this summer, so here’s to hoping I’ll make it to the beach this year. ☀️

I’m excited to be partnering with SCBWI’s Mid-Atlantic regional chapter for an upcoming webinar focused on building a sustainable illustration career. ✨

One of the biggest things I’ve learned throughout my journey as an illustrator is that there isn’t one ‘right’ way to build a creative career. Instead, sustainability can be made through a combination of work—freelance, publishing, licensing, products, teaching, etc.—and each path can be meaningful, successful, and fulfilling.

In this webinar, we’ll talk about the “starving artist” myth, overcoming fear and self-doubt, navigating the realities of the industry, and redefining what success can look like as a creative person. I’ll also be sharing insights from my own experiences as a working illustrator and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

So if you’re an aspiring illustrator, a student, or an artist trying to find your footing in the industry, I hope this conversation will encourage and help you be confident in carving out your own unique path.
