The Orange Garden presents Nova Libertatia, a three-day project at Forum Studios (@forum_studios) – Ennio Morricone’s historical recording studio, located beneath The Basilica del Santo Cuore in Rome. This 1200 square meter complex will feature artworks and performances by Meriem Bennani (@meriembennani), Lu Yang (@luyangasia), Tabita Rezaire, Agnes Questionmark (@agnesquestionmark), Miles Greenberg (@miles.greenberg), Yein Lee (@yeinplee), Jonathan Baldock (@jonathan_baldock), Sun Woo (@jade.haus), Harrison Pearce (@_harrison_pearce), Gabriele Silli, Cristiano Di Martino (@cristianodmartino), Eletronicos Fantasticos! (@eletronicosfantasticos), Salò (@salosongs), and Vipra Sativa (@viprasativa).

Nova Libertatia, curated by Arturo Passacantando, is an exploration into the notion of speculative utopias, presenting itself as an imaginary temporary habitat where artworks and art practices exist as parts of an intricate ecosystem based on the celebration of freedom of thought and expression.

The opening of the exhibition, on the 6th of June, will feature a special series of live performances by Eletronicos Fantasticos!, Salò and Vipra Sativa which will be held in the adjacent Forum Theatre.

The project will continue throughout the summer with the development of an experimental record edition, published by NERO Editions. Both the exhibiting and performing artists will be invited to visit and utilise the spaces and recording studios in whatever way they desire, giving life to an album which extends the notions of the exhibition.

Nova Libertatia is a project by The Orange Garden, in collaboration with NERO Editions and produced by Iterum (@i.t.e.r.u.m).

So happy to announce our release of QuestionGen (0.0022 ml) by @agnesquestionmark with @nero_editions developed in collaboration with @jzayner

QuestionGen (0.0022 ml), Agnes Questionmark’s first artist edition, is an anti-medicine: a single blistered 169 mg capsule containing 0.002288998764 ml of the artist’s DNA coming in a medicine box with a misinformative leaflet.

QuestionGen (0.0022 ml) reclaims and repurposes an existing medical device to deconstruct normative reproduction in human speciation, often used as a political propaganda to suppress queer exposure. This pill is an act of resistance as well as a rebellion against the coercive power that scientists and doctors exert on people’s bodies, enacting a series of discriminations based on race, gender, and class.

QuestionGen (0.0022 ml) allows a process of deconstruction of the human being as a privileged entity; it is a further step into a series of experiments, projects, events or happenings that will give an active contribution to the birth of a more egalitarian species. Your ability to reshape and transform yourself is the active principle of QuestionGen (0.0022 ml).

The pill was created in collaboration with Josie Zayner, bio-hacker and artist, who was able to synthesize Agnes Questionmark’s DNA from blood through a chemical DNA extraction method. Alongside texts by Agnes Questionmark, the leaflet features contributions by Josie Zayner, Kostas Stasinopolous, and Arturo Passacantando by @arturopassa

“Las Joyas Peludas” serves as an exploration into the notion of desire, an uncontrollable yearning which one can nurture for the physical or the immaterial, a craving for the unknown. In this realm, the artist wishes to provoke by defying concepts of beauty, wealth and sexuality. On this journey without limits, items or ideas that may be deemed dirty or degrading become glorified objects of desire. El Pelele’s ability to transform the decadent into the magnificent allows us to reflect on how contemporary ideals of desire are constantly being diluted by a falsely constructed “collective” morality. by @arturopassa

It is the intrinsic nature of our species to evolve, to change and adapt. An impulse which is engraved in our genetic code, spelled out in the very composition of our organism.

Why then do we live in a society which is stagnant, resistant to change?

Is it fear that prevents us from changing? Or have the technological and capitalist demands of the present age built a system of such rigid immobility that even those who contributed to its construction now find themselves squashed beneath its blatant inequity and inhumanity?

And how can one escape from this condition, and pursue one’s personal evolution?

When society imposes on us so many definitions, labeling and attempting to fix everything in place, our only way out is to question.

Question everything.

Question oneself, question others, question the very things which seem unquestionable, unbendable and unbreakable.
