I am very excited and feeling very fortunate to begin teaching a course next week at ArtEZ University that will be focusing on running; an activity which is very dear to me. Running is a hole in the day, a hole inside the before & after moments of your day, so when you’re running you’re being delightfully useless, you are making a hole in nothing, and at the same time you are the hole, while you run.
Thank you to all of the students who signed up to take part in a class that will involve moving around a lot at different speeds & distances and spending time outdoors, more exposed and open to the weather. The LAUGHING SPIDERS course will indeed be focused on running, but we will also be practicing walking and hiking, and we will visit a pickle factory in order to meditate on repetition and seriality, and question how certain movements/labours disconnect the body from itself, whereas other movements have the potential to cut holes in things.
In the self-portrait of me running I would like to thank @ming.morss for the temporary tattoo “is fog real?” that I placed on my neck, a location inspired by @calinicic , someone who once joined me on a three-day run/hike from Amsterdam to Arnhem. The last slide is a photo from 2013 of a spider tattoo, from a Kenneth Anger film, I just cannot remember which film. To the laughing spiders students reading this, please bring a rain jacket on Monday just in case, and to the other students reading this not in the class, you are welcome to join us on a run or walk anytime you feel like it. The class will culminate with a community event & fundraiser (a half-half 10.5 km marathon) so we welcome everyone to join, more news on that later in September. xo @bear.artez.nl by @arvoleo

Blood Skiing (2019) (Ex-lover skiing on the blood of my torn-out heart)(2025). Thank you Maurice for taking this bed-head photo of me after i was teaching for two days (which involved bowling) and then fell asleep on the gallery floor and woke up and began signing some prints with a pencil (+ some recent LV transportation handbags). (LV could also work well for (@leonneverweij or Lou @_vives_ )(?)
(Are you heart broken or were you recently heartbroken ?) (I’m trying to imagine being alive and never having had this experience). I recently made a valentines screenprint edition in the lovely print studio at Plaatsmaken in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The print is a re-make of a small painting I made 5 years ago when I was heartbroken in the middle of winter and had just moved to a city north of Amsterdam called Hoorn. It was snowing that day and I remember being in my new studio and looking down very surprised as the painting started to leak out of the cracks in my heart and painted itself onto the sketchbook page (it’s no coincidence that blood and paint both have fluidity and the capability of transportation).
(I also decided to make this new print because I was invited to be part of a Valentines day group show at puntWG in Amsterdam. For the show I exhibited one of the prints, but I also made a few extra ones to give away to anyone who visited the show with a broken heart.)
Since Valentine’s Day I have been wondering how many people around the city are heart broken; and I try to spend a bit of time each day seeing if it’s possible to spot them.) but I can’t. (Like today for example, near the Amstel river, I observed for awhile but all I could see were humans who looked more tired than their dogs, some had expressions like they had just drank gasoline, and many were noticeably unimpressed by the wind.) by @arvoleo

A few weeks ago I was sleeping in an abandoned hunting cabin in the mountains and woke up to the feeling of something crawling along my face and going into my mouth. I grabbed the thing with my hand and turned on my headlight. When I opened my hand I discovered a hairy spider looking up at me and laughing at me. It wasn’t until I got out of my sleeping bag and threw the spider outside the cabin into the darkness that it finally stopped laughing. I woke up in the morning to the sound of rain on the cabin roof and cow bells in the distance, the entire day was filled up with pouring rain and mud and fog, an afternoon of mud between the toes, so before sunset I decided to hike down the mountain into a small town in Spain and luckily found a bunkbed in a strange windowless hostel surrounded by car mechanics. I woke up around midnight with the intense need to vomit and spent the next few hours vomiting into a plastic shopping bag. Finally I was able to crawl into the bathroom to empty the bag and take a shower. The shower had many beautiful autumnal leaves ranging in colour from red, orange, and brown clogging its drain. As I was washing the vomit off my face and hands I noticed a tick burrowed deep into my thigh drinking my blood, which I ripped out with my two fingers. The next morning I learned that ticks in Spanish have the much too beautiful name “garrapata”. I did start taking antibiotics to prevent the chance of developing a red ring around the bite while I was in the middle of nowhere, but I would rather be thinking about dolphins, foot steps, clouds eating mountains, and temporary tattoos. I am trying to walk from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea through the Pyrenees mountains, along a trail called The Pyrenean Haute Route which is about 800km and goes through Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Spain, France, Andorra, and Catalonia usually taking about 30-45 days to complete. The reason being is I found these cartoon dolphins near the Atlantic Ocean so am attempting to carry them safely to the Mediterranean Sea in a cartoon-like manner. by @arvoleo

hello I heard whispers this morning that ghost poo may be making a ghostly appearance tomorrow at 11:11 am in the higgledy piggledy parade in xwesam (roberts creek) as part of the creek daze summer festival. Also I heard ghost poo has been eating a lot of wild mountain blueberries lately so the poos may be extra sparkly taken in Xwesam-Roberts Creek Community Association by @arvoleo
