Last night, we held the final class of “People Vs. Billionaires,” our free 5-week political education series for Socialist Summer School. We marked its conclusion with the class “Building A Socialist Society” led by Tanya Núñez.

All summer, we essentially asked one question: how do we transform society in favor of the needs of the working class? Our answer has been straightforward…through organization. We know clearly that when we organize, we win. We launched this series conscious that the system is at an unprecedented breaking point. Capitalism’s dead-end logic is on full display, but so is the resurgence of working-class struggle.

We learned that we have everything we need to build a new and socialist world. We have the productive capacity, the resources, the science, and more. What’s been missing is the collective power to put our developments to work for all of us, instead of for the profit of a few. Tanya made it clear for us, socialism is not a distant dream but an immediate possibility. The only question that remains is how will we organize to bring about that possibility?

What does education mean to you? The morning after arriving in Cuba, on the steps of the National Museum of the Literacy Campaign, we were asked this question by 28-year-old history professor and museum director, Lazaro Raídel Galano. Coming from Arizona—where public education ranks among the lowest in the U.S.—it was easier to think about what education shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t bury students in debt, line the pockets of AI surveillance companies and weapons manufacturers, or function as a school-to-prison pipeline. It shouldn’t be underpaid teachers and overcrowded classrooms. It shouldn’t be sacrificed to fund wars and sanctions abroad. It shouldn’t be motivated by money, but by the desire to learn and better society. The list goes on and on…and it doesn’t take a communist to see how corrupted our education system is under capitalism.

But what does it take to build something different? And what does it take to break the blockade on Cuba. I kept circling back to this question while learning from the Cuban people.

Cuba is a threat to the U.S. because it proves another world is possible. This despite a 65-year illegal blockade that attempts to starve them into submission. That Cubans are suffering under the blockade is undeniable. But education—as a historic pillar of Cuba’s socialist project—is what holds people together, in defense of their sovereignty against the violent genocidal beast that is U.S. imperialism. Despite the blockade, schools keep their doors open.

In Cuba, education is not just an inalienable human right but a shared social responsibility. This began with the 1959 revolution, which made education free at all levels, turned military bases into schools, and in a year’s time abolished illiteracy. Education is prioritized everywhere, from the family to the neighborhood.

For now, I reaffirm what the Cuban people taught me: education can be liberating. Every person has the right to be educated and the moral duty to contribute to the education of others.

A free and bright future is possible, one where cop cities are transformed into public school campuses and the genocidal blockade on Cuba exists no more.

It took billions of years to get here 🪨

For hundreds of thousands of years human beings inhabited the Earth without private property, classes, states, or any of the other elements that make up class society as we know it. And yet we are taught that class division is a natural and universal condition of human existence, and that capitalism — a system where the means of production are privately owned by a tiny ultra-rich minority for the purpose of accumulating more profit, while oppressing the majority of people through wage slavery and destroying the planet — is the only way to organize society. A plethora of evidence proves that capitalism has only made up a tiny part of human history, and just as it came into existence it must eventually go out….
