Ejay Weiss' papers and a selection of his artworks will be presented to Visual AIDS next month. Visual AIDS continues to encourage scholars to pursue research initiatives that focus on artists in their archive who have been overlooked and whose lives and works remain central to the art history of New York City and beyond. #ejayweiss #contemporary #art #painting #nyc by @as_studios

Hildy Maze, Vajrayogini, the Red Lady, wants you, 1987, oil on mixed media, 72 x 52 in. When Hildy Maze passed away in 2020, I wondered what would happen to her house full of beautiful artwork. She had barely exhibited during her career and her house was full.

I recently found out that Veronica Mahoney was able to establish a foundation for Hildy's art once it was released from probate in 2023. Thanks to Mahoney's stewardship, her art can be seen regularly at Gallery 851 in East Hampton. Tomorrow evening, the Gallery 851 will open a new exhibition of Maze's art. On July 15th, contemporary artist Manon Harrois (1988-2026) passed away unexpectedly due to injuries sustained from a car accident. Harrois was a prolific conceptual artist who was discovered by Gilles Fuchs and became known for her intricately-drawn blue notebooks that became the basis for her site-specific works that extended from Paris to Troyes, Lisbon, and Sao Paolo. In each city, Harrois culled and shaped sculptures, textiles, installations and drawings that were unique to the artist's immediate environment. Galeria Foco will continue exhibiting her art. It was so nice to read this article! Mayen Beckmann offers very good insight into living with Max Beckmann's paintings.
The two pieces seen in the background of this picture were painted in 1950, after Beckmann's trip to California.
"The Mill in Eucalyptus Forest (Mills College)" (1950) that appears on the left, is a reference to the building at Pond Farm in Guerneville, CA and the eucalyptus trees that populate the landscape there. Pond Farm was a celebrated ceramics colony that was founded and run by Marguerite Wildenhain (née Friedländer) in 1949. Wildenhain had been a member of the Bauhaus since 1919 and had designed porcelain dish-wares in Berlin.
"West Park" seen on the right is a representation of the campus at Mills College in Oakland, CA.
I have posted a recent video about Marguerite Wildenhain below. According to Wildenhain's diagram of ceramic vessels that appears in the video, Beckmann painted vessel #14 for "Large Still-Life with Doves" (1950) and placed it on the mantlepiece above the fireplace.
