Evidence has much to teach us about what works—and what doesn’t—in autism treatment. At ASAT, we believe good decisions are strengthened by learning from the best available scientific evidence, alongside best practices, expertise, and the experiences and insights of those we serve. As you may recall from past issues, ASAT has been showcasing some of the incredible volunteers who have shared their time and talent. It is with great pleasure that ASAT recognize a member of Professional Advisory Board who has been publishing articles for over ten years. Spoiler alert, in fact, he has authored or co-authored over thirty articles for us. Thank you, Dr. Tom Zane, for all your hard work and dedication. ASAT is very grateful for all you do.

Teachers play an important role in supporting autistic students, and staying informed about the research behind autism interventions can help educators make thoughtful, evidence-informed decisions in collaboration with families and other members of a student’s support team. ASAT’s Research Synopses provide accessible, practical overviews of published research on specific autism treatments and related topics, helping educators better understand what the research tells us (and what it does not). For teachers, this information can be especially useful when considering how research may relate to classroom practices, student supports, and conversations with families, behavior analysts, clinicians, and other service providers. Explore ASAT’s previously published Research Synopses on the ASAT website, along with newly written synopses featured in future issues of Science in Autism Treatment. The goal is to help teachers and other members of students’ support teams build their understanding of autism research and use that knowledge to inform thoughtful, evidence-based practice across school settings.

On National One Hit Wonder Day, ASAT urges families to be wary of autism treatments that hit the spotlight based on a single study—especially when conflicts of interest may be lurking behind the scenes. Just like fleeting chart-toppers, these “one-hit” claims often fade under scrutiny.
Real science doesn’t rely on a solo performance. Evidence-based autism interventions are built on multiple rigorous studies, replicated across time and settings. They earn their credibility through consistency, transparency, and peer review—not hype.
So before embracing any new treatment, ask: Is this backed by a chorus of solid research—or just a catchy headline? Because when it comes to autism, families deserve more than a one-hit wonder. They deserve real science that lasts. #Autism #OneHitWonderDay #RealScienceRealHope #ScienceMatters by @asatonline

As authors of this practical, suggestion-filled article, Simon Celiberti-Byam and Julia Weiss (both High School Externs with ASAT when the article was first published in Science in Autism Treatment back in 2023) remind us that awareness becomes most meaningful when it leads to action. For teachers, creating an inclusive classroom goes beyond raising awareness about autism; it means modeling acceptance, fostering opportunities for genuine friendships, encouraging students to be thoughtful and supportive peers, and helping ensure that autistic students feel welcomed and valued. The authors offer concrete, student-friendly suggestions that educators can use to spark conversations, promote inclusion, and empower neurotypical students to become allies in their classrooms and school communities, and hope this resource inspires you to consider the many ways teachers can help shape a school culture where every student has the opportunity to belong.

Originally published in Clinical Corner, this 2023 article is being revisited in this special issue of Science in Autism Treatment because of the continued relevance of building strong, supportive relationships between teachers and students. In this installment of Clinical Corner, Dr. Juliana Oliveira, BCBA-D, and Dr. Alice Shillingsburg, BCBA-D, discuss the importance of the pairing process and introduce nine simple, practical strategies that teachers and other providers can easily incorporate into their daily sessions. These strategies are designed to help educators establish and maintain meaningful rapport with students while creating more positive and engaging learning environments. ASAT hopes that these practical recommendations provide teachers with accessible tools for strengthening relationships and supporting successful student engagement in the classroom.

Individuals with autism and related disabilities may be at elevated risk in unsafe situations. One can only imagine the tremendous emotional strain a family may experience during an emergency, especially when they are responding quickly while a loved one with a disability may have difficulty understanding the situation or following instructions. What kinds of challenges might they encounter? Are they prepared to handle an emergency? To support families in these situations, ASAT is resharing information about a comprehensive resource, The September 26th Project. This initiative was inspired by a tragic loss of a mother and son and aims to remind, guide, and provide families with tools to be better prepared when confronted with life-threatening emergencies.

The Structured Ecological Assessment Tool (SEAT), created by Board Certified Behavior Analyst Tyler Fovel, focuses on how a student’s surrounding environment, including physical setups, social routines, instructional formats, and peer dynamics, impacts their behavior and academic engagement. In this review, Joalis De La Cruz, MS, MA, BCBA, and Kate McKenna, MEd, MSEd, MS, BCBA, outline the SEAT protocol and how it can be used to analyze the interplay between environmental expectations and a student’s current level of functioning. We hope their review helps you understand how the SEAT can be used to identify environmental factors that may affect student behavior, performance, and engagement and guide your educational services.
