Last month, my grandparents' house was put up for sale. So many of my childhood memories are surrounded by those walls. It's the people and places that shape us.

Childhood memories surrounded by these walls
I still feel the cold comfort climbing in between the sheets of a perfectly made bed on summer nights—and waking up tucked in between my safe spaces
The chill of the AC (close the door!) on a hot summer day—10 laps around the house before we could swim
The joy to be the first one in and the last one out at family pool parties; the exhilaration of swimming at night, with the pool lit up, before bed
I can taste the Andes mints hidden on Papa’s dresser, he’d share just one (OK, one more) to my eager hands
The anticipation of front yard Easter egg hunts, circling the court—the neighbors’ houses lit up on Christmas Eve—and peeking at neighbors beyond the fences
We spent hours flipping through photographs of a childhood still underway
Sneaking into the laundry room to find the stash of cookies for one more treat
The smell of the office, where only Grams sat behind the desk; the aroma of Musk walking into Papa’s bathroom; the nostalgic scent of burning leaves that brings me to the backyard again

What I’ll treasure most are the memories of hugs when the front door opened with anticipation and hands waved, kisses blown from the porch as we said goodbye
Three beeps to say so long; I love you

The house is empty now, but the laughter and joy still run through it—if you sit there in the silence just long enough, you can hear it. You can smell it. You can feel it.
