we drove all the way here,
to ojai, from kelowna.
days and days on the road in our suv💭

we moved through a big initiation this summer.

i am now kai and fin's sole parent. it's been sticky, and swirly with some big unknowns.

we're learning more by the year that our home lands don't hold us in the way other lands do.

so we packed up our hearts and headed south down the pacific coast.

we cried
we laughed
we sang at
the top of our lungs
we trust fell
into anew.

thank you to this land
for holding us
to these beings
to these rivers
for dancing with us
for singing with us
thank you to this remembrance
of who we are when we move

there's something to be said
about who one becomes
when witnessed, seen,
and valued — simply for being
maybe it's in the spaces
that we don't need to
translate our souls
that we become free

thanks to the wisdom of a precious being we met along the way, i now picture a vessel of water for the three of us. it stays clear only when we pour into it with intention—with love, with song, with nature. with honour, self-ownership, and joy.

i see all my relationships this way now—each one a riverbed offering containment. when the water flows with care, with momentum, it remains alive and clear.

when we don’t choose intentionally, when we make murky decisions, the water grows stagnant.

as we begin our descent back to the north, my intention is to bring that clear energy with us.

i want a life of prayer, of joy — one where spirit moves through all that we are — singing as loud as we can to the mountains.

and if i forget, i want the surge, the pressure, the remembrance that says go to where your heart is free.

on my 38th year

i am remembering
the impermanence of it all

i don’t wear my babies
on my hip anymore
and i don’t remember
the last day i did

i am remembering
that we are innately free
and we choose
which realm we live in 🌀

that this experience
is too precious
to marinate in anything
but love

and
if we meet it
with surrender
with movement
like the river —
if we choose
to see creator in everything
joy will know
where to find us

37 was a year
of blessings
of lessons
of medicine

we woke up one day this past summer, and decided to drive 24 hours to southern california, just the three of us.

these clips are from that 2 month road trip 🤍

the girls and i were cuddling in bed last night and fin fin said "why don't we just live free like that every day, listening to our hearts?" — my intention for this year is just that — to swim in new rivers and oceans and waterfalls and plant our feet in new forests and listen to the birds and sing and dance and let these wise seedlings lead the way. by @ash.kral

11 years of loving you

We spent the days leading up to your solar return, dipping in and out of crystal-clear pools and waterfalls, warming ourselves in the wood-burning sauna. You ran wild on the magical lands of @t_e_a_treehouse, building fairy houses with your sister, you were connected to mama gaia, and you were brave as you pulled us in and out of the glacier fed water into the dark, “be disciplined” you told us. We hardly knew where our shoes—or our clothes—were.

For your 11th year, my wish is that you always feel as free as you do when you’re running barefoot across moss carpets—that the water that has always moved through you continues to carry you, guiding you like a compass.

My first born. My teacher. My muse. Your soul knows no age—you will always have a home, you are home.

"i want to be a cowgirl," she said

"that's a big role to step into, but it suits you well", i told her—"but before you can be a cowgirl, you have to master the most important part, the connection to these beautiful + intuitive creatures.

@chriswaldhaus was so kind to open up his space, a wild horse sanctuary @cascadetrails_jt where he and @marissaumendoza rescue and train "untrainable" (in many cases) mustangs, in joshua tree. His connection with his horses is remarkable, and their calm nature is a testimant to his horsemanship.

i read a quote that he shared, to my little cowgirl recently, and it resonated deeply.

"The art of horseback riding is not solely
the purview of the select few, but rather is open to any who possess the will and the means to engage in it. Yet, let it be known that the essence of horsemanship lies not in the mere act of mounting a steed, but rather in the sublime ability to forge a bond with the equine creature be it on the ground or astride its majestic body.
For the true horseman or horsewoman, it is not enough to simply bark commands at the animal, but to converse with it in its own tongue, to understand its subtle gestures and nuances, and to respond in kind with a delicate touch and a quiet authority. The horse, like any sentient being, desires to be understood, to be respected, and to be guided with empathy and care. Thus, the mark of the accomplished horseman is not in the trophies won or the accolades earned, but rather in the profound connection that exists between rider and mount, a communion of trust and mutual understanding that transcends words and boundaries. In short, let it be proclaimed that anyone can ride a horse, but it is the rare individual who possesses the grace and skill to practice horsemanship in its fullest and most profound sense."

fin takes pride in her deep connection to horses, it's beautiful to see her connect with horses who are apprehensive to connect with other humans. I think this is the start of a beautiful journey 🐎

i wrote a poem before we left, it was something about salt water fixing everything—the sea, tears. it's been much more sea than tears, and a whole lot of transformation, and love and the best kind of romance. i spent months creating a vision board too, if i could sum it up into words, it would say something like: when in doubt, become the sea, or art, or a mermaid. my bestie came along for the drive from baja to sandiego, + she made me all three. find yourself a friend that does that. thanks for always seeing me + making me feel beautiful @trinacaryphotography by @ash.kral

Sometimes we are given the opportunity to make a brave choice. A choice to surrender the things that have been great, in exchange for even greater. It’s here a soul-ful, lively, boom-boom, heart out of chest, tears on cheeks, “I’m alive” kind of passion lives. It lives just around the corner from surrenders bend. words: @tessguinery
