THE BEST STORIES TAKE THE LONGEST TO WRITE.

Normally I would have had the press release out many yesterdays ago.

But Hōlus-bōlus wasn’t normal.

There are stories behind every designer, every artwork, every object and every strange little collision that happened inside those rooms.

So rather than rush to put another hundred beautiful images into the world, I want to tell you why they were there.

I’m taking my time with this 1.

The people. The pieces. The building. The light. The chaos. The curation. And what actually goes into pulling a show like this together.

“The Plunge”, powdercoated stainless steel weldmesh sculpture, 2026.

Active in furniture and craft, I’d always wondered how to enter the public art domain, so I have to thank Victoria @_tprojects_ for her call out and great mentoring program she ran last year via @banyulecouncil.

Subsequently when the @banyulecouncil Public Art EOI came out for an art piece at the local pool, I was interested.

I love swimming and seeing brave young kids leap into the water, trying to create the biggest splash ever!

So my idea was to create a mesh sculpture of my youngest son, wearing snorkel and goggles, tucked up in a “cannonball” position and hang it from the ceiling at the pool, as if he’s mid-flight.

After 3D scanning him, I must thank the fantastic people @tenniswarehouseaustralia for letting me use their large 3D printer to print the model.

Worried about weight and being able to “read” the shape, I switched to a smaller 12mm x 12mm x 1mm diameter gauge mesh for this piece..

So after wrapping the mesh around the form and then removing it, the sections were welded together and the piece powdercoated white to appear ghostly and “pop” on the dark ceiling.

Vertical nylon fishing lines were used to suspend the piece and act as visual “movement” lines, to look like he’s descending above.

An inter-generational, site-specific piece, “The Plunge” is my first public artwork and can now be seen in the foyer @watermarcbanyule.

Thanks Jacko for the modelling, @banyulecouncil for the opportunity, @watermarcbanyule for the space, @_tprojects_ for the training and @tenniswarehouseaustralia for the 3d printing! It takes a village…

“Bodice” bag - made from heat-coloured stainless steel mesh

Based on some great feedback that the 25mm x 25mm mesh of other bags was a bit open (potentially letting lippy or coins fall out) this gauge material is a little “softer” more captive and concealing.

Yet still holding to the principle of “nothing to hide”.

@simoneleamon ‘s iconic “Lepidoptera” chair, re-interpreted in steel mesh.

A homage piece and a thank you to a wonderful person who has helped so many aspiring designers in Australia.

Five months of tricky making - from heat colouring the stainless mesh in a very big kiln, to making custom staple guns, to creating inverted jigs to support the weight of the fabric layers during assembly - I learned a lot from the journey this piece took me on.

Definitely another “one-off” (or is it “one-of”?) for sale by silent auction ending 4pm today, Sunday 24th May.

@theladyinthewhiteute ‘s iconic “I-beam” bench, re-interpreted in steel weldmesh (with timber ends).

This one is 2.4m long, but the originals in timber were made to custom lengths.

Brutal with a soft touch.
