——— BEHIND THE WORK ——— One of my favourite places to be is behind the camera. For HŌLUS-BŌLUS, I worked with photographer Nick Caldwell to capture the interiors and designers/artists behind the apartments works, I just didn’t want it to be a standard portrait, but a little bit more of them within the frames. Creatives can be surprisingly nervous in front of a camera. I love shaking that out of them. Making them move, laugh, loosen up, grab something, sit somewhere they probably shouldn’t and whatever it takes to get past the “portrait face”. The aim was to make each image somehow connect back to their practice, personality or the world they create. Because the people behind the work are often just as interesting as the work itself. ——— PEEKABOO ——— THE BEST STORIES TAKE THE LONGEST TO WRITE. Normally I would have had the press release out many yesterdays ago. But Hōlus-bōlus wasn’t normal. There are stories behind every designer, every artwork, every object and every strange little collision that happened inside those rooms. So rather than rush to put another hundred beautiful images into the world, I want to tell you why they were there. I’m taking my time with this 1. The people. The pieces. The building. The light. The chaos. The curation. And what actually goes into pulling a show like this together. We recently had an absolutely marvellous jaunt with old & new friends at Hōlus-Bōlus for Sydney Contemporary. This VIP offsite was held at The Second, a decadent curated apartment stay in Surry Hills and was curated by gallerist extraordinaire Cassandra Bird in cahoots with design darling Emma Elizabeth. For the occasion we developed an exclusive fragrance to encapsulate the visual smorgasbord: No.85 Bacchanalia (Dionysia). Top notes of absinthe set the mood for this emergence of art and design in fragrance form. Imagine an unctuous, herbaceous feast doused in the seductive scent of a well spent long evening. A nod to the avant-garde age of the Paris salon where you might overhear Claude Cahun admonishing Gertrude Stein for paying too much attention to Picasso. This decadent scent called for a bold vessel, behold our metallic splatter vase in 1.5kg with a burn time of circa 200 hours. Available now via our Emporium in limited stock. So! A pretty special moment seeing our What We Keep cabinet included in Sydney Contemporary as part of Holus Bolus, curated by @emmaelizabethdesigns at @the_____second in partnership with @cassandrabird.gallery Originally designed around the objects we collect, protect and choose to keep, in partnership with @davidjonesstore and @powerhousemuseum the cabinet became home to a completely new collection of works and objects. Particularly special was seeing pieces from the @louisvuitton × @yayoi._.kusama collaboration displayed within it, following Kusama’s passing last month. Thanks Emma for always supporting Australian design and bringing together such an amazing group of artist and designers! This year's nominees for The Object award at INDE.Awards include Beanless by Ash Allen Design. The idea of Beanless was to create the "softest" piece of furniture from steel weldmesh. The piece was then sandblasted and flocked deep burgundy red to maximise its sensory "softness". Also featured is La Crea by FrancoCrea. La Crea celebrates an Australian husband and wife design duo harmonising their unique design voices. Embracing the challenges of blending personal and professional lives, La Crea marks Franco and Jacqueline Poppy's first full collaboration together. Completing the lineup is MASS by Dutoit. MASS explores how a familiar household object can carry greater material responsibility without compromising on design resolution. The project centres on a table lamp produced in 100 per cent recycled HDPE, shifting a typically utilitarian polymer into a refined interior product.
