Meet Asha Wheeldon — Founder & CEO of Kula Foods.

Asha is a Kenyan-Canadian entrepreneur and chef using food as a tool for cultural connection and community wellbeing. Inspired by Afro-Caribbean flavours and the communal food traditions of her upbringing, she founded Kula Foods in 2018 after noticing the lack of diverse representation in the plant-based food space.

Today, Kula Foods produces plant-based proteins and sauces carried by major retailers, expanding access to culturally rooted, sustainable food options. Beyond her business, Asha mentors BIPOC and newcomer entrepreneurs and supports community initiatives that strengthen inclusive food systems.

Her work lives at the intersection of food, identity, and belonging—building resilience through nourishment and shared experience.

I am getting more comfortable sharing my personal story in new rooms. It helps to have friends in these rooms.

This one is for the little girl that didn’t know her voice matters. She never would have imagined herself speaking in public in front of hundreds of people.

Thank you @10_women_strong and @onegirlcansociety for the invitation to speak and my dear friend @karen8mc for showing up, a beautiful introduction and capturing this special moment.

Asha Wheeldon (founder of Kula Foods @kulafoods ) and Ekaose Nwadiani (founder of VanSuya @van.suya) sit down and chat about the beginnings of their businesses and plant-based African products ✨😍

Did you know that they both started out at the Coho Commissary @cohocommissary, a shared kitchen space, where they first met? From there, they were able to grow their independent food businesses into what it is now!🍴

Earlier this year, VanSuya partnered with Kula Foods by including their products in Mother’s Day gift bags, along with other black-owned brands. We’re excited to partner with them again by sourcing plant-based beef directly from Kula Foods for our new vegan menu!

"By Us: The Beauty of Black-Owned" is a section of The Encounter, our newsletter, dedicated to spotlighting Black women business owners.

@ashawheeldon is a passionate Plant-Based food maker and community builder, known for her work as the founder of @kulafoods. Originally from Kenya, Asha migrated to Toronto at 11 years old, where she was exposed to a wide range of Caribbean, West African, South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine and culture. After moving to Vancouver, Asha found herself searching for spices, food, and ingredients that reminded her of home, which ultimately inspired her to found Kula Foods.

Meaning “eat” in Kiswahili, Kula Foods is a Certified B Corporation based in Vancouver dedicated to creating a more inclusive and sustainable plant-forward future of food. They offer a range of delicious plant-based prepared foods and sauces inspired by Afro-Caribbean cuisine.
