Frost advisory tonight here in the Hudson Valley, NY... and like each year that’s come before I spend the day making bouquets to bring inside, collecting seeds, and marveling at each and every hurried bee. I am present in the moment in this little ritual of mine. It’s the closure I need in order to make it through winter. A little extra time to enjoy each bloom before nature sleeps, before I return to my easel, and once again begin the countdown to spring

Maybe next year I’ll find a place to sell or donate some of my flowers (or both!). It’s a bit of a flooded market at the moment… but I can’t help but want to spread there joy to others and feel the returned joy of sharing them 💗 we’ll see, never know, just an idea really!

On this day in September 1982, I came crashing onto the scene. Blue, I’m told. Cyanosis. Maybe I couldn’t breathe? They tested me for all sorts of things, then put me into my mother’s arms and told her I was good to go. Blue is the color of a sapphire. September’s birthstone. The stone in my wedding ring. My eyes are blue. The sky is blue. This planet is 71% blue. My veins are blue. I don’t know what the connection is, but these were my thoughts as I sipped my coffee this morning. My first cup of coffee (pumpkin spice), chapter one/page one, of my 44th year. Giddy up, let’s go 🐎 ☀️

Mid-August my husband and I sit with the swallows as they restlessly group together at our favorite state park. Migration is afoot. I feel excited for them, but also an overwhelming sadness • It is said what swallows feel during this time is akin to pain, but I think they’ve got it all wrong. I think a more accurate description of what they’re feeling is the duality of experiencing both hesitation and anticipation at the same time. It’s ambivalence, cognitive dissonance, maybe even bittersweet apprehension. And you could say that’s painful, all in-between things are. But I believe it goes way deeper than the simple proclamation of “pain”. These creatures aren’t simple, no animal is. Their movements are urgent as grief and joy sit side by side. They both want to go and also wish to stay, and that’s a very uncomfortable feeling indeed. But they do eventually go, and then they return, and so turns the wheel of life • Until mid to late September when all the stragglers have gone I’ll watch their movements, listen for the chittering, and whisper farewell 💔 by @ashlieblakeart
