@ashokvish and I are curating students' works from Karnataka and Telangana. Karnataka has one of the highest number of fine arts colleges, close to a hundred. We have been traveling across two states, and it's quite humbling to see students'works and work with them. We are also in the company of some amazing practitioners and collectives to work on this together. by @ashokvish

Many a film finds its maker wrestling with the medium to scan and examine what it’s capable of holding—the expansion of minds and bodies it might stimulate. We wander through films when a sudden moment’s epiphany appears more reflective than anything else in life. Everything then seems more tangible, within the ambit of likelihood than being outright unseen and unfelt. Screening at MAMI Independent, Ashok Vish’s short film, Automagic, is about a tender frisson zapping between strangers, cracking open their hearts in the midst of what they can and cannot do. The androgynous artist Madhu (Rutviq, utterly bewitching) hails an auto. He doesn’t even summon as much as float towards the driver, Ratnakar (Chetan C.s.) The driver is almost paternalistic initially, chiding him for his dressing which, he insists, can issue wrong impressions. Madhu’s feminine mask flusters him. However, Madhu takes these deeply familiar remarks in his stride, boldly playing with him.

A haughtily teasing Madhu nudges at Ratnakar’s boundaries. Ratnakar is observing celibacy for a pilgrimage. With a glint in his eyes, Madhu dares, tugging him if sleeping with men is also forbidden. Rutviq is smouldering—someone you could well believe might disappear into the mist and leave no trace. He infuses Madhu with this subtle edge of unpredictability. Madhu’s sharp gaze and Ratnakar’s tentative, fledgling watchfulness are spun into a complex, throbbing give-and-take. As the latter himself suggests, Madhu knows answers to every question he seeks. He’s testing the waters, drawing out the repressed, the undiscovered.

Debanjan Dhar writes.

“The Commons We Build: On Creative Care and the Future of Practice”
in collaboration with BLAK C.O.R.E Collective @blak.core

As part of Ashok Vish’s curatorial engagement with the Students’ Biennale, the workshop is designed as a two-day forum in collaboration with artist Brook Andrew
(https://www.brookandrew.com/) and the BLAK C.O.R.E Collective (Museums and
Collections, University of Melbourne - https://blakcore.edu.au/). The forum features
presentations, conversations, and performances. Our primary goal is to share how
Indigenous (Adivasi), Dalit, and Queer artists build their practices and communities of
support. Also, we aim to create an immersive environment where students can actively
listen, learn, converse with, and ask questions of our facilitators throughout the two-day
workshop, as they develop a new idea/project under the guidance of the facilitators.

Dates: Dec 15,16, 2025

I have had the pleasure of co-curating the Students’ Biennale 2025-26 at this edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and I couldn’t have asked for a better co-pilot than @shahchinar. We were tasked with engaging with two states: Karnataka and Telangana. Although we ended up curating separate exhibitions, we conducted all the work—including institutional visits, research, installation, and production preparation—together. And made it fun! We also had an excellent support team in @sahanas_art @anujithmurali3 @absen taken in Kochi-Muziris Biennale by @ashokvish

Won the Cinematic Achievement Award at the @tisffest. Thank you so much for this incredible honor. This Cinematic Achievement Award is awarded to four to five films signifying a more democratic way to celebrate cinema than honoring only "the best" film. Amazing! by @ashokvish

This cluster of short films celebrates pleasure in love, in beauty, in being alive. These stories embrace desire and delight without apology, finding joy in the ordinary and the extraordinary alike. A reminder that living fully is its own quiet rebellion.
