POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

As we continue our Students’ Biennale Revisited series, up next is Land Erosion / Memories of a Land, an installation by Tanmoy Dutta (Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication, Hyderabad) exploring the unique laterite landscapes of Birbhum, Bankura, and Purulia in West Bengal.

The work reflects on how government and private development projects encroach upon these territories, displacing the Santal Adivasi community and severing their deep-rooted ties to the land. Despite generations of memories and belonging, the Santal people continue to be denied agency over their ancestral territories.

As traditional mud houses give way to concrete structures, the region’s red soil becomes an increasingly poignant reminder of a changing landscape. A recurring element in Dutta’s practice, the soil serves as a tribute to the land and its people. Through sculpture, painting, and an archive, he brings together fragments of memory to create a charged memorial to both.

Curated by Ashok Vish, Land Erosion / Memories of a Land was on view at VKL Warehouse.

Threads of Reflection | Students’ Biennale: Revisited

Showcasing a Dhakai Jamdani saree design rendered in ceramic, Threads of Reflection by Sadia Sharmin (Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication, Hyderabad) captures the contrast between luxury and necessity. The recreation of the traditional Jamdani textile motif in ceramic unfolds a narrative that reflects on the difficult choices between preserving cultural luxury and addressing essential needs amidst rising costs.

The Jamdani pattern pays tribute to the artist’s cultural heritage. Due to economic struggles, the weavers of this craft are often compelled to replace the traditional muslin fabric with cheaper alternatives. Each ceramic thread represents the delicate Jamdani weave, symbolising the need to forgo luxury and resort to basic necessities, while reflecting how economic scarcity disproportionately affects working-class communities. Through this, the work invites viewers to consider the complex balance between tradition and modern life, and the communities that bear the harshest consequences of economic strain.

Curated by Ashok Vish, the work was on view at BMS Warehouse.

ANTHROPOCENE CAMPUS:
02 - 05 July 2026
Calorie, Science Gallery Bengaluru

Milk Matters: Dairy in the Anthropocene

For decades, governments and health systems have promoted milk as an essential source of
protein, calcium, and micronutrients. Milk is embedded in infant feeding practices, school
nutrition programmes, and ideas of what a complete diet should look like. The landscape of
dairy, driven by cooperatives and industrial processes, has evolved to meet this need. While
producing milk requires intensive use of animals, fodder, land, water and infrastructure. The
ongoing climate crisis has increased the pressure on these systems. Rainfall patterns change the
availability of fodder. Heat stress affects animals and milk yield. Dairy farms spend more to cool.
In turn, this affects milk availability and prices. At the same time, concerns about protein intake,
calcium deficiency and malnutrition remain real.

These tensions make milk a useful site for cultural inquiry. Milk sits at the intersection of bodies
and ecosystems, nutrition and climate. By following milk–how it is produced, processed,
consumed and distributed–we can ask sharper questions about what counts as nourishment in
a warming world, and who gets to decide that.

At Milk Matters: Dairy in the Anthropocene, we are bringing together nutrition scientists, dairy
and veterinary researchers, public health scholars, artists and social scientists together to ask:

Why does dairy hold cultural importance in India?

What role does dairy play, nutritionally, in our diets?

How do dairy systems contribute to the climate?

What might sustainable dairy futures look like?

We're looking forward to seeing you there!

Glimpses from the Students’ Biennale Seminar, “Pedagogies, Possibilities, Precarities,” held at the Pavilion, Bastion Bungalow from 25–27 March.

Day 2 brought together a series of thought-provoking exchanges, beginning with Panel 3, “Aesthetic of Ambedkarite Thought & Visual Futures of Equality: A Line of Inquiry,” featuring Prabhakar Kamble, Jeebesh Bagchi, Bidyut Sagar, and Zuleikha Chaudhari. The conversations continued with Panel 4, “Art Schools in Transition: Institutional Conditions and Student Practices,” with presentations by Vibin George & Jithinlal NR, Iram Ghufran, Ashok Vish, and Chinar Shah.

The day moved across themes such as Ambedkarite aesthetics, spatiality in art-making, and the idea of law as a performative framework. Discussions also turned toward the shifting function of art institutions, questioning how they shape, support, or constrain emerging practices. Participants reflected on curatorial responsibility, the challenges of institutional ecosystems, and the need to foreground marginalized knowledge systems within contemporary discourse. The panels wrapped up with an engaging Q&A session.
