Time is becoming hard to grasp. I can’t believe it’s already been three years since we went on a long anticipated family reunion to the Philippines. Prior to 2022, the last time we visited our family in Davao was in 1999. Back then, I was far too young to understand my heritage, Filipino culture, and how stunning the country is.

When someone asks me, “what’s it like being Filipino?” These are first things that come to mind: family, food, and fun.

Beyond those three words, I’ve learned resilience is innate for Filipinos. As people who were colonized for centuries by Spain and then the United States, Filipinos prevail and persevere in the most beautiful ways. As my sister and I get older, we’ve discovered more about our roots: asking my mom difficult questions about her past; making my own Filipino friends in my late-20s and early-30s; and learning the true history from Filipino/a historians and activists.

I wish I could tell my younger self that it’s okay to be the tan one in your class (shoutout soccer for enhancing my true colors). That you’ll grow to love your Filipino nose. That palabok is actually delicious, and you’ll be asking your mom for her secret recipes when you’re craving her adobo and lumpia. That you’ll be proud to be Filipina 🇵🇭 ☀️

When you practice with wiffle balls but sneak in an occasional mushroom 🍄⛳️

My dad always practiced with wiffle balls in the empty lot of our neighborhood. I remember when my parents took care of Nash, my dad would hit his clubs as Nash fetched the balls. Every now and then, I’d take a swing for fun. Fast forward to today, I have my own tote bag of wiffle balls that I take to an open field. Like father like daughter.

Has my wallet seen improvements, yes. Has my golf game seen improvement, still evaluating.

Sparing the drive to the range and bucket payments, these wiffle balls are my personal fun way of getting reps while saving money and time.

Being Filipina is a super power💪🏽

Happy Filipino American History Month 💛🇵🇭

Looking back at our first trip to the Philippines in 1999, I’m so lucky my parents took me and Stacey to the Motherland. I might’ve been too young then to realize how incredible and impactful it was to meet my family, experience the culture, and visit the place where my parents got married. Had I known it’d be another 23 years till we’d return, my 6-year old self might’ve journaled about our adventures. Even then, I can look back and recognize how that trip to the Philippines in 1999 was an impressionable moment: it connected me to my Filipino roots and instilled my love for Chippy, Ube, and family gatherings around the table #masarap
