"PART OF ME" is now live in the world. The melody of the song came to me in the night during the pandemic. I worked on it here and there for several years before I met the deftly talented @chriskapicamusic who was game to take a stab at it with me. At our first session he wrote the bass part (guy slaps on the bass!) and I loved it. We then used found sounds from all over my house to create the percussive elements including: a Stanley Cup, a broken cookie jar, a metal chair, a plastic water jug and hangers. We ended up cooking it all the way with the help of gifted music engineer @blaekmusk. I learned so much about music writing and production from Chris and Dom, and we ended up making something that reflects the fun we had along the way. I have to shoutout and thank @evahrose who had come over right before I met @chriskapicamusic and helped me make a few changes in the lyrics and melody. Her approach to the song clarified my understanding of the story I was writing about. This song was inspired by a time in my life where I lost myself a bit after a breakup. I was heartbroken and just needed to "be" without expectation for a while instead of "do". I was aware I was rebelling against important parts of myself-- knowing I was inside a story that I knew wasn't mine, but wanted to have fun just exploring anyway. That time came and went and there was a distinct moment where I was "ready to go" and move forward from it. This song goes out anyone in stuck in an in-between space (maybe just a bad mood) who wants to come back from the detour--perhaps holding onto the life souvenirs and looking back with laughter. It's okay to shimmy forward just as much as it is to trudge, but this song supports the shimmying part of movement. 😉 Also, I want thank @krlmyr who graciously did an impromptu photo shoot as we were enjoying an afternoon with friends by the pool. My first release "Shake Shake" is out on Spotify/Apple Music today. It's a groovy summer bop about a whimsical and playful conversation with the moon. I wrote it over a track @richstagramms (Rich Gonzalez) was working on all the way back in 2017. This past August we reconnected and recorded it at @thepizsness' (Dave Pizzimenti) studio in LA, then had @mortono85 (Bryan Morton) master it. The whole process of writing and recording this song was casual and organic, much like the California landscape that inspired it. The experience gave me the impetus to fully explore the music I'd been writing for over ten years. As I began to rewrite I set out on a path of learning and creating that has propelled me into writing more in the past year than I did in the past ten. This journey has served as the catalyst to introduce me to many new creative friends that I appreciate, cherish and look to for guidance. I have so many "moons" in my life and I have so much love for you all. Downtown LA is one of my favorite places to spend time within our enormous city. Last night we went to Bestia, Eightytwo (arcade/bar), The Mermaid, walked through Little Tokyo, and ended our night at Redbird with a tour of Vibiana. There is so much to do and see there and the grittiness of this forever in flux pocket of LA always provides me with much to reflect upon. I always walk away with burgeoning song ideas and feelings of inspiration. I love exploring with @good_job_talya who spends a lot of time working on art in her downtown studio. Dashley does Italia Part Due! Tuscan dreams, acoustic sessions, summer rain, new friends and truffles. For us traveling is about discovering the stories. There are the stories of the land, the structures, the people we meet along the way, and the ones we are making up as we merrily roll along (sometimes about a vague weatherman). Travel for us is about playing and finding new inspiration. It's about reconnecting with friends @cappycapla living in new places. It's also about reflection and shedding some of the stories we've been holding onto from home that are not serving us well. We are grateful for the unexpected and enlightening stories we found at @borgosanfelice, @osteria.villasesta, and with @foxberrylondon. It was the most charming part of our journey! Jacob Collier's Hideaway retreat was a little over a month ago and everyday I stop and have a moment of fullness in my heart for the memory of it all. My "phone home" moment--where I remember the music magic (literally everywhere), the joy, the epiphanies, the laughter, the trees, the talent, the harmonies, the moving fox and @schmeinstein coming out to investigate our percussive rhythms at 4am as we sat determined to play together until the very end. I truly met incredible people until the moment I said goodbye. It transformed me as a musician, deepened my belief in the power and importance of creativity and put me in touch with my ever evolving inner creative on another level. I think for many of us it was a vortex of healing in a fractured world. ❤️ Thank you to @jacobcollier and the rest of the faculty for sharing so much with all of us. @suziecollier @christhile @doddleoddle @davidlongstreth @june.lee1214 @beccastevensbsb @emilylazarlodge @gomyben @gigiamazonia @schmeinstein @dreamcatcherevt Also shout-out to @brandontfinn for his epic design skills. Summer Drop numero uno: Solo trip to NYC. I did a poor job of taking pictures with friends and family and a wonderful job being in the moment with them. Highlights included: •Getting to spend time with @pianoguru88 and @kingarediscoversmusic IRL •I went to @donangienyc twice 🤷🏼‍♀️ •Seeing @jacobcollier and @mofro11 perform in Central Park •Walking 50,000 steps through the city by myself and just enjoying the magic of the sunlight cascading over buildings and parks. •Listening to live music throughout the city. •Seeing my cousins Josh and Olivia who are too smart to have IG. •The Food....always the food. by @ashpalais
