on saturday, as the sun sank and the harvest moon rose, we planted a cactus garden for Kage at his resting place on our property.

It’s hard to believe it took three moons…a whole season before we were able to commemorate his special space. Acts of love take patience and we chose the cacti with care, each one holding a special meaning.

we chose San Pedro…harvesting cuttings and letting them callous…from the very plant in the catio that Kage and I would watch flower year after year. The plant has been with us almost as long as Kage had been. San Pedro is considered to be a bridge between earth and the spirit world. It is a symbol of strength + resilience, spiritual connection and a heart opener.

we also chose the old man or the grandfather cactus. It represents wisdom, endurance and protection. Kage always was and always will be our protector. He was such a wise cat and when we would pet him under his chin he made a grandpa face, even when he was young and we referred to the expression as grandpa chin.

Lastly, we chose the king cup cactus because Kage was the King. And for his beauty, the king cup produces the most beautiful red flowers and Kage was the prettiest kittiest.

we grounded it all with volcanic rocks from one of our favorite, sacred places and watched as the sun and the moon put on the most spectacular show, bathing his garden in the most beautiful light.

Kage’s Tree

It is a Princeton (golden) Maple and when it reaches full maturity it will be golden year round

This summer has been one of the hardest I can remember. The grief of losing our kitty, Kage earlier this summer has broken me open & our little family is feeling an emptiness without him. With that, the heat of summer was long and relentless. We didn’t much leave the desert, not wanting to leave Rikki, Kage’s brother alone as he also is suffering a great loss.

We did take some time away to celebrate love. On August 27th, D and I celebrated 10 years of marriage, 17 years of partnership and 22 years of friendship. We have lived many lives together in the past 22 years. It has been a beautiful adventure, not without challenges, but mostly pretty dang sweet.

As is our Taurean nature (yes, we are both Tauruses), we wanted to go somewhere relaxing, indulgent, beautiful & low key. We decided to return to one of our favorite areas of Baja, Valle de Guadalupe. Known for its innovation in wineries, creative & sustainable cuisine, eco architecture & close relationship with nature.

We chose to stay at the gorgeous @miraearthstudios a collection of 10 rammed earth studios that sit alongside a restaurant, bar and pool. Each studio comes equipped with kitchenette & wine bar, fully stocked with local artesanal products. There is also a sauna in the bathroom, hot tub & fire pit on the patio overlooking the valle, blackout blinds that serve as a projector screen for movie watching and a Sonos sound system. Needless to say, they nailed it. It was the perfect blend of indulgence + relaxation. We didn’t much leave the room except to visit the pool, which we mostly had to ourselves, as it is also the heat of summer in Baja.

The one outing we did make was for our anniversary dinner, an eight course tasting & pairing menu at @lunario.valle a Michelin star & green star restaurant. The menu changes based on the moon cycles, lunario signifies moon almanac. Our first experience at a Michelin starred restaurant and it was above + beyond. The icing on the cake was the partial blood moon lunar eclipse that happened during our experience. They were so kind to pause the courses so we could go outside & experience it. It was so perfectly kismet.

A Love Letter to Kage

My sweetest baby angel kitty Kage,

It has been a little over three weeks since we said goodbye and I’ve had a hard time putting pen to paper, let alone choosing a mere 20 photos to honor your shadow spirit.

The way time passes is wild…to think it was almost 15 years ago (a third of my lifetime) that you sauntered into our Oakland loft, belonging to someone else, no doubt. From the moment we met, I thought you were the coolest cat and as the universe would have it, and the stars aligned, you came to live with us. You chose us and we chose you. It was kismet.

Kage means shadow in Japanese. From my understanding, the meaning has more nuance than in the English language. It does not hold a negative connotation. Instead, in Japanese, a person with shadow describes someone who has depth in their personality, experience. Kage is the shadow that is created by the light, an invisible force. While we did not give you your name, you were perfectly suited to it. You were a force Kage, an old soul.

You were so special, Kage. Your sense of curiosity was beyond. You loved nothing better than sit in the kitchen observing D cook. Taking it all in. His sous chef. And there was nothing more entertaining than having you sit with us at mealtime, on your designated stool or the bench, gently tapping our arm with your paw for a taste of whatever D had cooked up. You loved to try everything. To be a part of it all. The third stool at the counter will always be yours.

And you were the best brother to Rikki. While we thought you might kill him when we brought him home as a tiny kitten, it was the opposite. You brought him into the pack. Showed him the ways. I loved coming home to find the two of you curled up together in whatever patch of sunlight you could find.

D liked to refer to you as my protector because you were always there. Always present with me and by my side. You were my shadow. You were my Kage. I will always hold our time together near and precious to my heart. It was the most beautiful gift I could have ever been given. I love you Kage, my prettiest kittiest 🤍 by @ashsabra

solstice musings 𓏸●

summer in the desert brings with it a quiet kind of beauty. if you have a constitution such that can withstand the heat of the day then you are gifted with the sweet, subtle moments in between. the caress of cool morning air while watching the sunrise turn the world golden. the smell of rain on the wind as a monsoon blows in. sunset picnics in our very own national park, mostly void of wary travelers + just high enough that the evenings might even be called cool. sultry midnight swims. so many stars + a deep kind of quiet 🤎 taken in Joshua Tree National Park by @ashsabra
