Memory eternal to the one woman revolution. Teacher, artist, partner, and friend, it would not be a lie to say my mom changed the life of everyone she met. She taught me to pray, to create, to love, to live. She pursued her passions unashamedly, showed hospitality unreservedly, and enlivened the world around her every day.

My mom was a Jesus loving hippie at heart, a student of the Jesus Movement and leader of many through the cesspool of American Christianity. With guitar in hand she split the waters of this religious swamp, revealing Jesus as the solid rock underneath, who is strong enough to take the heaviness of our footsteps as we ventured forward, upward, inward, towards freedom, towards life.

My mom was cool--she marched to the beat of her own drum, and if you listened long enough you'd find yourself marching right along with her. Everything she touched, whether kpop or butterflies or church, became suddenly so interesting. She had the amazing power to bring out the best parts of a thing, of a person. She was probably the only person in the world who made me, her dorky nerdy weirdo son, feel cool, and I know she did so for many others too. She brought out the part of you that made you feel alive, and made the richness of her own life a safe space to grow into the glorious living being you were made to be. She brought me to life--physical, psychological, and spiritual; without her, I would be nothing.

I will miss her more than words can say. No word can capture her loss. The anguish goes deeper than disaster, catastrophe, cataclysm, evisceration. She gave so much meaning and structure to my life it's impossible to go on living in the same way without her. But she is with me in the beautiful world of friends, family, gardens, art, and music that she built, a world that still feels like her, holding me even now. Her love is woven into every bone, sinew, tendon, fiber of my being. I love you mom, thank you for everything. by @ashshem

Tea Whisk Memorial Service

At the close of the year, it is customary to burn the tea whisks used throughout the year, thanking them for their service, offering gratitude to their fine craftsmen, and reflecting on the gatherings they've made possible. Countless particles of tea have passed through their tines, clumps of matcha broken up by bamboo's careful balance of strength and flexibility. They take the brunt of all our forceful actions and transmute them into gentleness, a conduit of softness between ourselves and the delicate powdered green tea leaf. In whisking we disturb the water, but tines transform our turbid strokes to gentle rhythms, scrubbing clean our minds and developing in us the calm we need to make and recieve tea. It is the only necessary thing, the single item that transforms the powder into tea, rendering it ready for consumption by our guests. And with it, the whole of the hosts work, the guests encounter, and everything that has lead to this moment, even all of history, is present now in this one sip: 一期一会。
