✨🧘 We’re so excited to announce that Tim will be teaching Ashtanga Primary Series at Narali every Sunday at 1:15 p.m., starting 8th November!

We know so many of you have been asking for a daytime class on Sundays, and from November, it’s happening!

Here’s a little glimpse of some of the poses you’ll explore. Ashtanga follows a set sequence, connecting breath and movement to build strength, flexibility and focus.

Whether you’re an Ashtanga lover or trying it for the first time, all levels are welcome. Tim will guide you step by step, with options along the way. You don’t need to be able to do the poses in these videos to join!

We can’t wait to see you on the mat. Booking link in bio.

Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana is a standing posture in the traditional sequence of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, a logical continuation following on from the preparatory work in Padangusthasana (foreward fold, hand to toe bind), Padahastasana (deeper hip flexion in foreward fold), Utthita Trikonasana & its standing equivalent Utthita Hasta Padanghustasana… @keen_on_yoga would likely disagree, as he believes that Utthita Hasta Padanghustasana is purely from Indian western influenced gymnastics, but what if gymnastic took its inspiration from Yoga? We have linguistic examples of eastern influence in western language such as Trikonasana (three angled pose) and Navasana (boat pose, where we get the western word ‘navy’ & ‘navigation’ from).

Utthita Hasta Padanghustasana is as previously mentioned a standing extension of a traditional yoga posture, Utthita Trikonasana. When performed in its full expression, pressing out through the ball of the foot and extending leg length through hip flexors & psoas whilst creating tensegrity/balance through the bind of the big toe with index finger, middle finger and thumb, this posture is an obvious extension/evolution of triangle pose, again, @adam_keen_ashtanga would probably disagree, he believes this is a gymnastics pose.

Now, the next posture is Ardha Badda Padmotanassana… all of the previous postures have prepared for this in subtle way either via strengthening or lengthening muscles, or via spinal extension or flexion in combination with preparation of breath and bandha.

Is there symbolism behind this posture? Perhaps. 🤔 We see this posture again revisited later in the primary series with Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana, also in intermediate series with Supta Vajrasana🤔

The lotus carries a rich symbolic history in Indian religious and philosophical traditions.

It grows from muddy water yet emerges above the surface, relatively untouched by the mud surrounding it. This has made it a powerful symbol of spiritual development, clarity and the possibility of remaining centred amid the difficulties of life.

Exploring backbends with Kathy Cooper - Kapotasana (pigeon/dove posture).

#Kapotasana drills with @kathycooper11 this weekend during her Ashtanga yoga workshop at @yogasanghamanchester

This is a posture that lots of us generally work on over *many* years, a peak posture of the Ashtanga Yoga Intermediate series (Nadi Shodana). I’ve still not quite 100% got the fullest expression myself due to limitations in scapula rotation, meaning my elbows tend to stick out and flap around a bit (a bit like pigeon/doves wings, ironically) as I enter deeper into the asana and attempt to bind with my feet, they also don’t quite touch the mat…. Perhaps this is a limitation that I will always have, but regardless, it’s something that I can continue to work on and I’m happy with the progress that I have made, and my journey into deeper backbends continues to be fun; A culmination of steady regular practice, patience and a few @kinoyoga drills thrown in for good measure.

Come and Join me at Yoga Sangha Manchester for early morning Mysore classes.

Mondays 6:00-8:00am - Mysore
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00am - Mysore
Saturdays 8:30-10:00am - Hybrid led/Mysore
Sundays 18:00-19:00pm - Ashtanga Techniques

Day 2 of Kathy Coopers @kathycooper11 Ashtanga Yoga workshop at @yogasanghamanchester (Kathy is 78 years old btw! 🤩)

Here is a look at some of the things that we explored in the workshop today, largely drawn from the intermediate series of Ashtanga though with the foundations of what is established in practice from the Primary Series.

We began with ‘Breath and Bandhas, exploring the relationship between breath, bandha awareness and alignment and how these principles can support a more stable, sustainable practice through all of the vinyasa and transitions that we make in an Ashtanga/yoga practice.

The afternoon session moved into back bending, looking at the principles behind safe and progressive backbending, with development work and adaptations to suit different bodies and levels of practice.

Kathy worked individually with those who attended throughout the sessions, offering guidance, adjustments and practical insight drawn from many years of teaching and practice. I have saved my favourite video of Kathy helping me with Kapotasana for my next post! 😝🙏❤️

Looking forward to tomorrows day of practice and learning!

Looking forward to this weekends workshop with one of Ashtanga Yogas OGs, @kathycooper11 at @yogasanghamanchester

Kathy Cooper has dedicated more than four decades to the practice and teaching of Ashtanga Yoga. Beginning her practice in 1976, Kathy studied extensively with David Williams (@ashtanga4life )and Nancy Gilgoff, who taught her all of the Ashtanga series and pranayama. She also studied with K. Pattabhi Jois in the US and in Mysore, India.

- Led Primary

We’ll begin our weekend with a led Primary Series class.

Kathy’s teaching emphasises presence, inner connection and mindful strength, encouraging us to discover greater balance, vitality and joy within the practice.

- Mysore

Each morning will begin with a Mysore Self-Practice guided class.

Workshops include:

- Breath & Bandhas

An exploration of breath and bandha awareness, together with alignment principles to support safe practice and longevity.

- Back Bending

Exploring the principles and insights behind safe back bending.

This workshop will include development work and adaptations, allowing you to explore backbending in a way that supports your own practice.

- Inversions & Ashtanga Conversations

Kathy will break down inversions and explore how they link to posture and the wider practice.

If you want to be an Ashtangi in your seventies, posture is key. So who better to learn from than someone who is actually doing it!

We will also have the opportunity to hear Kathy talk about her 50-year journey with Ashtanga, how the practice and tradition have evolved, her experiences along the way and what she has learned through a lifetime of practice and teaching.

Aṣṭāvakrasana - an challenging posture from the advanced A series of Ashtanga: The Sanskrit name comes from aṣṭa, meaning “eight”, vakra, meaning “bent”, “curved” or “crooked” and āsana, meaning posture or seat. The name is also associated with the sage Aṣṭāvakra, who, according to the traditional story, was born with his body bent in eight places.

The story of Aṣṭāvakra is often understood as a reminder that wisdom and ability cannot be judged by outward appearance. as despite his physical form, he became a teacher of King Janaka.

Physically, Aṣṭāvakrāsana brings together several elements of the Ashtanga practice: strength through the hands, arms and shoulders, deep core engagement, hip mobility, twisting and the ability to maintain control while the body moves into an asymmetrical shape.

Join me at @yogaontheedgeuk for Restorative Yoga on Monday evenings at 7:15pm
