On Tuesday night, Tulsa Public Schools held its first of six community meetings ahead of an Oct. 19 vote that could close or consolidate 17 schools. This potential closure/consolidation is brought on by an anticipated $12 million shortfall. Declining enrollment is a leading reason.

Questions were fielded, concerns were met by TPS leaders, who say the community’s response will help the board carry out its decision.

These potential closures/consolidations would not affect the current school year. There are five more community meetings remaining.

A new era of leadership is nearly underway at the Tulsa Police Department.

On Monday afternoon, Jonathan Brooks, formerly the deputy chief, was sworn in as the department’s 42nd chief. He succeeds Chief Dennis Larsen, whose retirement is effective Wednesday after 47 years with TPD and more than two years as chief.

Brooks was introduced by Mayor Monroe Nichols as the next police chief on Aug. 20. More than a month later, Nichols swore Brooks in.

“Thank you, Mayor Nichols, and thank you, Commissioner (Laurel) Roberts, for having faith in the Tulsa Police Department and the confidence and the courage in appointing me as the 42nd Chief of Police,” Brooks said at the ceremony.

Need a hot meal on a quick lunch break? Another pound of ground beef for the cookout? Thought you had another roll of toilet paper in the cabinet? Well, Oasis Fresh Market’s new downtown Tulsa location is a convenient spot.

For the first time in more than a decade, the downtown area has a grocer. Oasis owner and founder AJ Johnson said Monday was a dream turned into reality.

Hours for the market are limited this week (open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and a lunch special from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday). Starting next week, though, normal hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 119 E. 6th St.

Crusoe, an AI infrastructure company, has doubled down on Tulsa. A Monday morning ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated a 400,000-square-foot facility and the fact that between this new facility and the original one — which was announced in August 2024 — there are more than 300 Crusoe employees.

Crusoe’s headquarters are in Denver. The company focuses on climate based efforts, which it says have led to positive results.

BIXBY — The 26-foot I-beam from the World Trade Center is twisted. It’s rusted. But as the centerpiece of the 9/11 memorial in Bixby’s Washington Irving Park, it allows those who attended Friday morning’s annual ceremony to remember the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

On the 25th anniversary of 911, a crowd of about 150 gathered in Bixby for the program. Some left right after; others stayed to wander around the memorial.

ICYMI on Tuesday: the University of Tulsa is lowering its undergraduate tuition from $54,000 to 25,000 starting in fall 2027.

This change makes it the most affordable private research institution in the region, the school says. The rate in 2027 is for first-time, full-time students and will be locked in for four years. The university said the rate is to reflect what many students already pay after financial aid — federal, state, tribal, other scholarships, etc. It will be funded “entirely by private gifts,” University of Tulsa President Stacy Leeds said.

Leeds said many TU students already pay $25,000 or less in tuition, and students currently paying more will receive additional financial aid to bring their cost down to the new $25,000 cap. Graduate students’ tuition will not be affected.

Around Oklahoma are numerous donor centers for the American Red Cross and One Blood Institute. They, like all centers around the country, are in need of blood.

The Red Cross is specifically short on O positive, while OBI is especially looking for O negative.

To figure out where to donate, hear from local representatives from each organization, learn more about the shortage — head to the link in my bio.

Tulsa Area United Way and the national research organization United for ALICE recently released a report that measures Oklahoma financial hardship. 43% of Oklahoma households can’t afford basic needs, it said.

The 43% figure is an improvement from last year’s — 45% — but still higher then the national average of 41%.

“Most of these families are working, have at least one working adult in the household — one or more — and yet, they are unable to pay their basic bills,” said Melanie Poulter, Tulsa Area United Way’s director of research and data.
