The reason I’m using AI may surprise you.

I’m Dr. RJ—a licensed clinical psychologist, executive burnout strategist, author, speaker, and consultant.

Most executives won't do this because they're afraid of what people will think.

Afraid they'll seem unresponsive. Afraid they'll miss something important. Afraid people will think they're not committed.

But here's what actually happens when you batch your email:

You stop operating in constant reaction mode.
You make better decisions because you're not fragmented.
You get more strategic work done because you're not constantly interrupted.
You model sustainable leadership for your team.

And the "urgent" things? They're almost never actually urgent.

Most people just label everything urgent because they know you'll respond immediately.

But when you set a boundary like this, you train people to distinguish between what's truly urgent and what can wait a few hours.

And the work that actually matters—the strategic thinking, the big decisions, the leadership that moves things forward—that work requires uninterrupted time.

So yeah, batch your email. Set the boundary. Let people know when they can expect a response.

And watch how much better your work gets when you're not living in your inbox.

Comment TIME if you're ready to stop living in constant reaction mode. by @askdrrj

Somewhere along the way, “responsive” started to mean “available immediately.”

Those are not the same thing.

You can be responsible, professional, and attentive without answering every email, text, Slack message, or request the moment it arrives.

A delayed response is not automatically neglect.

It does not mean you do not care.

And it does not mean you are bad at your job.

Constant availability has a cost.

Every notification pulls your attention somewhere else. Every interruption asks your brain to switch gears. And when that happens all day, it becomes harder to protect time for focused work—and harder to ever feel finished.

Healthy response-time boundaries might look like:

Checking email at designated times.

Turning off nonessential notifications.

Communicating realistic response expectations.

Allowing something to wait when it is not actually urgent.

Being accessible is part of work. Being continuously accessible does not have to be.

Authenticity means saying "I need to come back to you." Stop overcommitting. Give yourself time. Rest isn't a reward; it's essential. Are you resting when you're exhausted, or first? #WOW #EBC #Authenticity #RestIsEssential #SelfCare by @askdrrj

I’ve been thinking about this sacred moment lately.

As we approach the midterm elections, I’ve been volunteering with the NAACP, phone banking from the comfort of my own home.

And sometimes, it doesn’t feel like enough.

Especially when I think about my hero, the late Congressman John Lewis, a man whose courage, conviction, and sacrifice helped shape history. Having had the honor of meeting him is something I’ll always treasure (thank you Tonya ♥️).

Civic duty has always been important to me. And while my contribution may seem small compared to the sacrifices of those who came before me, I’ve realized something.

My contribution may feel small, but it’s still a contribution.

We’re all busy. And it’s easy to convince ourselves that we don’t have the time or capacity to do more.

But I’m committed to doing what I can, with what I have, in this season of my life.

And maybe that’s the reminder for all of us. Find your something.

All of our somethings add up.

You may not have lifted anything heavy today.

But you may have made 50 decisions before lunch.

What gets handled first?

Who needs a response?

Do I approve this?

Do I move the meeting?

Do I delegate it?

Do I just do it myself?

Decision-making requires cognitive effort. When that demand keeps piling up—especially alongside interruptions, competing priorities, and time pressure—it can contribute to mental fatigue and make later decisions harder.

That is one reason I tell leaders to stop counting workload only by the number of tasks on the to-do list.

Mental workload counts, too.

Sustainable performance is not just about managing what you do.

It is also about reducing how much your brain has to repeatedly decide.

Authenticity is courageously telling yourself the truth first, then others. It's admitting you're at capacity, not performing strength you don't have. Say 'I need rest' or 'I'll get back to you.' Set boundaries. #WOW #EBC #Authenticity #SelfTruth #Boundaries by @askdrrj

There is an ART to balancing work and life.

Some call it work-life balance. Others prefer work-life integration, work-life harmony, work-life flow, or work-life alignment.

Call it whatever you want. It’s possible.

Somewhere along the way, we started convincing ourselves that balance was unrealistic. That success requires sacrifice and something in our lives just has to suffer.

I disagree.

Balance doesn’t mean giving everything equal time. It means being intentional about what gets your time, energy, and attention.

Will it look different in different seasons? Absolutely.

But let’s stop treating burnout like it’s the unavoidable price of success.

You can be successful AND have a life you actually get to enjoy.

That’s the ART of Balance.

Urgency has a purpose.

But when everything is urgent, people lose the ability to tell what actually matters most.

That creates a different kind of stress.

You are constantly reacting.

Constantly switching priorities.

Constantly trying to figure out which fire gets your attention first.

Over time, that kind of work environment can contribute to chronic stress, decision fatigue, and burnout.

Not every deadline is an emergency.

Not every request deserves an immediate response.

And not every problem should become everyone’s problem.

A healthy workplace should make priorities clearer, not louder.

One of the ideas I appreciate from It Doesn’t Have to Be Crazy at Work by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson is their challenge to a workplace culture built around constant urgency.

Too many meetings.

Too many interruptions.

Too many “quick” requests.

Too many long days that have somehow become proof that you care about your work.

Their argument is simple: good work does not require constant chaos.

From a burnout perspective, that matters.

When everything feels urgent, your brain is repeatedly pulled away from focused work. Then people often end up extending the workday just to finish what they could not complete during the workday.

Good work requires effort.

It does not require constant chaos.

Sometimes the problem is not that you need to get better at handling the craziness.

The work may not need to be this crazy in the first place.
