Why French press coffee?

Simply put, because it's the best cup of coffee I've ever had.

It's not the fanciest, or the most expensive, or the most complicated to prepare. You don't need four machines, special equipment, or a masters degree in Coffee Science from Portland.

We spent the majority of quarantine traveling the country, sleeping out in National Parks, National Forests and BLM land in Rocinante, (our weird little van that you see parked at the store all the time.)

In the summer, when it gets hot, you go up in elevation until it gets cool again. In the winter, when 90% of the country is below freezing, you go to the desert. Wherever you end up, it's usually <40° at night, and your only heat source is a campfire and a cup of coffee.

This is that cup of coffee. It's simple, it's very strong; it is a small, good thing. It will make your day better, and transform you into a Joyful Warrior who fears nothing and steamrolls any difficulty and transfixes your enemies in despondent fear.

Or you can get some kind of sad foamy latte at a gas station and cry in your car at lunch.

Your call. We're out here.

We're Open Now!

I get a lot of questions about the hours.

Our hours are Variable. Most days we're here around 8:00, 9:00 on saturdays, because we tried 8 and nobody came. And we stay until around 11:00 or 1:00, whenever it feels like it's time to go home. And then we come back most nights around 5:00 or 6:00, and we stay until we get sleepy or cranky. We take Tuesday and Wednesday off, because of sleep and life. And usually Sunday mornings, because I'm not trying to get struck by lightning.

Some days everything runs like a top, and we have 20 different items on the menu at the exact moment we open. Some days things run like a broken watch, and we figure it out freestyle.

Truth told, I've already had a 20-year career of showing up places I didn't want to be at times I didn't want to be there, making things I didn't want to make for people I didn't like, and I'm damn sure not going to do that at a place I own, reviews to hell.

So, some days, we just like to let the butter sit in the Sun and listen to John Prine for a bit.

If you get it, you get it.

If you don't, they sell bad coffee and cookies made by a robot at the gas station. Help yourself.

(Also! We did some detective work and we're pretty sure we had a suspect tray of cinnamon rolls that went out yesterday, so if you got one that didn't seem right, it might not have been. There was one set that got half the right amount of sugar, so it might not have risen correctly. Haven't gotten any complaints yet, but if you got one that was beat, come on in and I'll make you whole.)

A small, good Post Script:

It's getting pretty wild out there.

Y'all might be able to ignore it, or distract yourself while it happens, but this country is becoming something I don't recognize. The people in it are becoming something I don't recognize.

I believe in optimism and hope, but I'm scared we've already lost.

Maybe not.

Everyone in America, including you and me, needs to take a hard look at their values and decide what they will or will not tolerate. You'll know, because the feeling will come from your guts, not your brain, and it'll whisper in your ear while you scroll, or ignore the news, or pretend everything is fine with your friends and coworkers.

There might be nothing in there when you listen for that feeling. I get the sense that a lot of Americans will find a blank, dead void in the place where conscience lives, filled up with memes and hot takes and the self-absorption of performative online activism.

But if you hear that voice and you can't ignore it... it's probably time to get uncomfortable. It's time to do the things that you're scared of, or things that might be outside of your normal risk window.

Marching in a circle with clever signs isn't going to do it this time, and you know that. That's why you're afraid.

But the world that is coming is much scarier, and I promise, you won't be able to ignore it.

Figure out who you are and what you believe in, then act. Or fucking don't.

See y'all on the other side of all this.

Good luck. taken in Hand Lake by @asmallgoodthingpa

Happy Holidays from the small, good hermitage deep in the Misty Mountains of Middle Earth, where the current Outhouse temperature is -2 degrees Fahrenheit and every dog is wearing pajamas.

Hope y'all have a lovely end of the year, and find just what you're looking for in the new one. I miss seeing your faces. taken in Misty Mountains by @asmallgoodthingpa

Hey friends!

Traveling from the Misty Mountains back to Mordor today to FINALLY pick up hooded sweatshirts and hopefully present some of them to their owners.

If you are around town tonight or tomorrow and you'd like yours hand delivered, send me a message and Ellie and I will make it happen.

If you are unavailable or far, far away, send me a message with your current address and I'll get them in the mail this week. Otherwise, I'll reach out in the next couple days and get your items in the mail to wherever you are. FINALLY.

ALSO, if you're ever passing through the Catskills, and you're hungry, I run the kitchen at a little food Co-op where we make delightful stuff with local produce, including a bunch of bakery stuff you might recognize. Pull up, if you're ever in the area!

Over and out! See you in the Streets. taken in A small, good thing by @asmallgoodthingpa
