Connecting communities through a living corridor.

Another fantastic result at the 2026 NSW AILA Landscape Architecture Awards, where The GreenWay received an Award of Excellence in the Infrastructure category.

On Gadigal and Wangal Country, the project delivers a two-kilometre section of the GreenWay through complex infrastructure conditions, connecting parks, neighbourhoods and transport while supporting walking, cycling, play and everyday recreation.

Our work brought together landscape architecture, wayfinding and interpretation, creating a legible and connected experience across tunnels, bridges, rail infrastructure and open space. A consistent system of wayfinding, seating, lighting, bicycle parking and drinking fountains establishes continuity while responding to the character of each location.

The landscape also strengthens the GreenWay as an ecological corridor through endemic planting, habitat restoration, wetlands and biofiltration — reconnecting people, place and Country.

The jury recognised the project for demonstrating “the power of landscape architecture to create great places, strengthen native ecological communities, and embed Country, play and art within interstitial spaces.”

A new landscape for a living harbour.

Recognised with an Award of Excellence in Civic Landscape at the 2026 NSW AILA Landscape Architecture Awards last week, the New Sydney Fish Market brings landscape, architecture and ecology together to create a new public waterfront.

The new public domain reconnects people with Blackwattle Bay, with more than 6,000 sqm of public space and a waterfront promenade extending the foreshore connection between Glebe and Pyrmont.

At the heart of the project is a landscape that works with the architecture and harbour environment as an interconnected system. A fully native coastal landscape of 87 trees and 13,415 plants across 65 species provides shade, shelter and seasonal variation, while rainwater capture, treatment and reuse reduces potable water demand by 45%.

The landscape also contributes to the health of Blackwattle Bay, with living seawalls and in-water interventions improving habitat complexity and marine ecology.

Built within a complex waterfront environment, the project demonstrates how landscape can perform - creating public space while contributing to climate comfort, water management and ecological health.

“The jury noted its blurring of destination building and public domain, accommodating large crowds while offering intimate experiences and connections to Glebe Foreshore.”

Connecting people through city-shaping infrastructure for sustainable movement.

We’re celebrating the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp, recognised with an Award of Excellence in Infrastructure at the 2026 NSW AILA Landscape Architecture Awards.

After more than 40 years of advocacy, the 185m ramp provides a continuous, step-free connection across the Harbour Bridge, replacing the former 55-step access.

Early data is already showing the impact - with overall cycleway usage up 30%, female weekday commuting up 56%, e-bike use increasing from 16% to 22%, and child users more than doubling.

Designed on Gadigal and Cammeraygal Country, the project brings landscape, architecture, engineering, heritage, public art and cultural engagement together to create a new way across the Harbour.

For us, the measure of the project is not only the infrastructure itself, but who can now use it - and how it is changing the way people move across the Harbour.

The jury noted that “the project demonstrates leadership in landscape architecture, that shapes infrastructure into civic spaces with lasting public value.”

Small in footprint, designed to have a lasting impact.

Another great result for our Adelaide studio, with the Roseworthy and Waite Campuses Yarning Circles receiving the 2026 AILA South Australia Landscape Architecture Award for Small Projects.

Led by ASPECT Studios and co-designed with Paul Herzich of Mantirri Design, the project was shaped through collaboration with Kaurna Elders, First Nations representatives and the University community.

The two Yarning Circles create culturally meaningful places for gathering, learning and reflection. At Waite, botanical-inspired screens reflect endemic plants, seasonal cycles and the campus’s horticultural identity, while at Roseworthy, a striking canopy maps Country and draws on the story of Ilya, the Red-bellied Black Snake.

The jury recognised the project for showing how “small projects can create lasting impact when shaped through genuine collaboration and cultural leadership”, and for the “beautifully crafted outcome achieved through thoughtful design and modest budgets.”

A historic place reimagined.

A great night for our Adelaide studio, with Fort Largs receiving the 2026 AILA South Australia Landscape Architecture Award for Civic Landscape.

After 140 years closed to the public, the historic coastal defence site has reopened as a civic landscape connecting heritage, public space and the coastline.

The jury citation recognised Fort Largs for its ability to “carefully balance heritage conservation with contemporary community life” and create a “distinctive and enduring civic landscape” for current and future residents.

Congratulations to our Adelaide team and everyone involved.

AILA recognition for Landscape Planning.

Congratulations to the Yarra Ranges Council on receiving the 2026 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Victorian Award of Excellence for Landscape Planning.

The ngurrak-ba wurrung balit (Country Voice Strong) Indigenous Design and Engagement Protocols, developed by Yarra Ranges Council and ASPECT Studios in partnership with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, provide a framework for culturally respectful collaboration between local government, designers and Traditional Owners.

We’re proud to have supported the Yarra Ranges team in this important work, and to acknowledge the contribution of former team member Anne-Marie Pisani, who led the project.

The award recognises an approach that puts Country, cultural knowledge and respectful engagement at the centre of how landscape projects are shaped.

Different climates. Shared Challenges.

We recently welcomed Sean O’Malley, Managing Principal of @swagroup Laguna Beach studio, to ASPECT Studios, alongside friends and colleagues from landscape architecture, urban design and architecture. Practices joining us included @fjcstudio, @@urban_spark_studio, @latstudios_, @tcl_studio and @oculusstudios.

Sean shared SWA’s climate-focused work across the USA, exploring how landscape is responding to fire, flood, heat and ecological change.

ASPECT Studio and TCL then shared the Greenline Master Plan, our vision for transforming more than four kilometres of Melbourne’s Birrarung / Yarra River waterfront. The plan puts the river’s ecological health and biodiversity at the centre, with increased canopy, ecological restoration and a continuous public realm connecting people with the river.

The discussion that followed explored how landscape can respond to climate pressures while strengthening ecological, cultural and social connections to place - across Australia and the USA.

Two wins for Kauri Lane at the Queensland AILA Awards.

Our Brisbane studio is celebrating two awards for Kauri Lane at West Village, an Award of Excellence in the Small Projects category and the Sun Smart Award.

Matthew Durning and Zoe Lyons accepted both awards for ASPECT Studios alongside @r@rpslandscapearchitects continuing a project that began more than 10 years ago. The first stage was delivered while Matthew and Zoe were at RPS, with the second stage continuing at ASPECT Studios.

The jury described Kauri Lane as an “exemplary demonstration of landscape architecture transforming constraint into opportunity”, recognising its landscape-led approach and transformation of a narrow urban thoroughfare into a thriving urban forest.

Within just 980m², 80% of the site is dedicated to permeable deep soil, with 12 large Kauri Pines creating natural canopy and a generous green landscape.

Our regenerative approach to city-making tackles complex challenges like urban heat, one tree at a time.

The Wave – Stage 1 designs are open for consultation.

The proposed designs for The Wave – Stage 1 are now open for community consultation on the Sunshine Coast.

We’re leading the landscape design for the Bells Creek (Aura) and Caloundra station precincts on behalf of CoastalTraX, working with architects @grimshawarch and @modedesign_corp to shape public spaces, parklands, active transport connections and ecological landscapes.

Our Brisbane Studio Director, Matthew Durning, believes that ‘Good transport design is about what happens when you step off the train, how a station connects you to the neighbourhood and the landscape beyond.’

The Wave – Stage 1 forms part of a new heavy rail connection between Beerwah and Birtinya.

Can design help ecosystems thrive?

Earlier this year, our Sydney Studio Director Louise Pearson joined Belinda Bean and Rousseau Anai for Space Matters, a live storytelling event exploring how green design thinking can improve wellbeing in our cities.

In her presentation, Louise explores regenerative design through two competition projects: Pachacamac Park on the central coast of Peru and Spectacle Island in Sydney Harbour.

This carousel offers a glimpse into the thinking behind Pachacamac Park - and how a regenerative approach can shape the way we work with a site and its natural systems.

Louise also shares ASPECT’s proposal for Spectacle Island, where the island is reclaimed as a nursery to help vegetate both land and sea.
