SYDNEY TOWN HALL SQUARE DESIGN APPOINTMENT

Continuing a stream of recently completed and celebrated public projects in Sydney, @johnsonpiltonwalker and @aspectstudios announce our partnership in the design of the @cityofsydney’s most ambitious new public space — Town Hall Square.

The collaborative design team is deep in the creative process, exploring what a truly contemporary civic square can be for Sydney.

Town Hall Square is envisioned as a civic heart — a space that meets everyday needs while elevating the city’s shared centre. It’s an opportunity to create a public realm that is generous and inclusive.

JPW and ASPECT Studios have been responsible for the design and implementation of some of Australia’s most outstanding and awarded public spaces:

The New Sydney Fish Market Opens as a Landmark Destination

Project Director, Louise Pearson and Project Lead, @miguel.serrao from @aspectstudios, join @3xnarchitects and @bvnarchitecture in celebrating the opening of the new @sydneyfishmarket. This incredible project has taken many years to realise and unlocks a vital new public realm.

Perched at the heart of Blackwattle Bay, the waterfront unfolds as a welcoming edge of water play and public art that celebrates cultures old and new. Native planting and generous seating frame the harbour, while an amphitheatre transforms the public domain into a lively stage.

Green pockets of vegetation and abundant places to sit, weave in subtle ‘fishy’ references, and flashes of safety‑orange offer a crisp nod to the site’s industrial past.

As one of the busiest and most popular coastal trails in Australia, and due to significant erosion from a storm surge that slammed Sydney in June 2016, the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk which is also home to the heritage listed Waverley Cemetery was closed over concerns for the safety of its users.

We seized this opportunity to rethink, redevelop and restore this section of the famous track and have since designed and documented the new extension, building on the successful clifftop walk that we completed just over 10 years ago for Waverley Council.

Sandstone and native plantings are used throughout to reflect the crystalline forms of Sydney’s clifftop geology, and a new lookout provides a point to stop and contemplate, where visitors can absorb the stunning surrounds and powerful views all the way to North Bondi.

As the final resting place of more than 100,000 people, considered and thoughtful placement allows walkers to be positioned lower than the adjacent cemetery grounds to respect the sacredness of the place.

A perfect blue sky day at our Sub Base Platypus project with @lahznimmoarchitects . The Razzle Dazzle eye catching graphics on display.

Formerly a torpedo factory, submarine base and gasworks, Sub Base Platypus is a new public domain on the foreshore of North Sydney, homeland of the Cammeraygal People.
Featuring a shaded BBQ area with seating, a playground inspired by the site’s maritime heritage, and a scenic over-water walkway to Kesterton Park, Sub Base Platypus is a place where visitors can enjoy R&R on the waterfront and engage with local history.

Thanks @lahznimmoarchitects for the awesome 360 video!

We are delighted that several of our projects were recognised on Friday night at the NSW Architecture Awards, picking up a total of nine accolades.

The CBD and South East Light Rail project - an ASPECT Studios collaboration with @grimshawarch and the @cityofsydney, on behalf of @transportfornsw, supported by @randwickcouncil - won the The Lord Mayor’s Prize and an Urban Design Award. The highly collaborative project is recognised as one of the most significant transformations in the history of Sydney's city centre. Our team was honoured to have followed through on the visionary concept for the transformation of George Street which was established by the @cityofsydney and @gehl_citiesforpeople. The project shows that previously unimaginable change can happen and when it does it can bring transformational civic benefits.

The Marrickville Library, a project we collaborated on with @architecturebvn, picked up numerous awards including the prestigious NSW Premier’s Prize, the Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture, and an award for Public Architecture. The judges noted that "The project represents a vision for the future of public architecture, as a facilitator of community engagement, a positive contributor to and representation of its contextual fabric, and a celebration of its historic and natural environment". The project also picked up a People’s Choice Award for Life under the category of 'We Are In This Together'.

The @bankweststadium, by @wearepopulous with ASPECT Studios, won the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture, a Commercial Architecture Award, plus also won a People's Choice Award for Life under the category of 'Post-iso Party'. Finally, our collaboration with @lahznimmoarchitects on the @unsw Sir John Clancy Auditorium was also recognised with an Educational Architecture award.

We are so proud to have been involved in the realisation of these fantastic projects. Congratulations to all of our colleagues and collaborators.

Massive congratulations go to @atlassian, @shoparchitects, @architecturebvn and all of the consultant team for the groundbreaking plans to build the world’s tallest hybrid timber building for the new Atlassian headquarters in the tech precinct at Sydney’s Central Station. We are delighted to be the landscape architects for this highly aspirational, resilient and sustainable project. ASPECT Studios is responsible for the public realm and the gardens and Sydney landscapes that will be woven through the fabric of the building.

The design aims to pursue sustainability aspirations through innovative climate concepts, construction and building operations by setting out to achieve 50% less carbon emissions in construction compared to a conventional construction project; 50% less energy consumption compared to a conventional building; 100% renewable energy from day one of operation. There is a massive commitment to biophilia with many floors dedicated to indoor planting and elevated park spaces which are integral in the design for this highly sustainable 40 storey workplace.

Scheduled to be completed in 2025, the new building will be expected to house thousands of tech workers and create a new technology precinct for Sydney.

Sub Base Platypus is emerging!
The ASPECT Studios / @lahznimmoarchitects collaboration to renew the former Submarine Base for the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is nearing completion. Resplendent with razzle dazzle camo murals, dripping with greenery, and opening roof hatches for light and air with courtyards opening to the harbour. Add to that the parks and a new connection to the harbour ferry, and Sydney has a new place to visit, explore and work. *repost from @lahznimmoarchitects l 📷 @theguthrieproject | @simonwoodphotography
