As an Arab American and Muslim, 9/11 has always been deeply personal to me. In the years that followed, many people who looked like me or shared my faith felt like we had to prove just how American we were. But the truth is, we were proud Americans then, and we are proud Americans today.

America has given my family opportunities that changed the course of our lives and created possibilities for future generations. For me, that gratitude became a calling to serve. It led me to public service, to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and ultimately to a career dedicated to giving back to the community and country I love.

Today, I remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, honor the first responders who ran toward danger, and reflect on the responsibility we all share to serve, strengthen, and stand together as Americans. by @assad_turfe

Great spending some time yesterday with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. I first met Keith back in 2016 and have always appreciated the way he thinks, leads, and approaches public service.

He’s never been afraid to take on tough issues, stand up for people, and stay focused on the work. Always good catching up with someone I’ve respected for a long time. by @assad_turfe

As voters consider the Wayne County transit millage on the August 4 ballot, here’s some information about the transportation services currently available in the Canton Township Community.

The Nankin Transit Commission provides curb-to-curb transportation for eligible residents of Canton Township, including many older adults and people with disabilities who rely on the service for medical appointments, grocery shopping, work, and other essential trips.

Nankin Transit serves Canton, Westland, Wayne, Garden City, and Inkster through a partnership with SMART. SMART currently provides 17 vehicles to Nankin Transit and contributes approximately $800,000 toward its $1.8 million annual operating budget. In 2025, the SMART-Nankin partnership provided more than 16,200 passenger trips.

The current Wayne County transit millage that helps fund SMART is expiring this year. The replacement millage on the August 4 ballot would continue funding SMART’s existing services and support proposed transit improvements throughout Wayne County.

If the replacement millage is not approved, the existing millage will expire, and the SMART funding that currently supports Nankin Transit would no longer be available, which could affect Nankin’s ability to maintain its current level of service.

The attached map also shows the proposed SMART fixed-route and other services that could be added in Canton if the replacement millage is approved. Canton does not currently have SMART fixed-route bus service.

Our goal is to provide factual information about the transportation services available today, the proposed changes, and how the ballot proposal relates to those services so voters can make an informed decision. taken in Canton, Michigan by @assad_turfe

Last week, members of County Executive Warren C. Evans’ executive leadership team and Community Engagement Team joined Transportation Riders United and local leaders for a Lunch & Learn at the Romulus Senior Center ahead of the August 4 Transit Millage vote.

Seniors had the opportunity to ask questions, receive factual information about the transit millage proposal, and better understand how the measure could impact the transportation services they depend on to get where they need to go.

Wayne County remains committed to helping residents stay informed about issues that affect their communities. taken in Romulus, Michigan by @assad_turfe

Happy International Women’s Day.

Today I want to honor my mother, the strongest person I know. She has been through more than most people could ever imagine, including the loss of a son and a grandchild, yet her resilience has never wavered.

Through it all, she has shown strength, faith, and compassion, and she has always led by example. She is truly a leader in my life and someone I will always look up to.

She taught me that kindness and compassion should always be at the core of who we are.

I’m forever grateful for her. ❤️ by @assad_turfe
