Last week, more than 10 members joined volunteers and staff for an afternoon of world cuisine, games, laughter and connection. 🫂

The end-of-summer party was organised and led by our Member Advisory Group (MAG). We cooked a diverse spread including Pakistani curry, Guyanese macaroni pie, Ghanaian jollof rice, delicious muffins and date flapjacks. 🌍🍴

We also played mini table tennis, Jenga and card games, while catching up, socialising and getting to know each other in a safe and fun space. 🎲🏓

"It was nice to enjoy with other people and be together. Everybody was cooking their own [cultural] food and we shared to people. I am happy that I was able to suggest something and it happened. I like to cook. I like to eat" - AN, ASSIST Member

11 days ago, Eve and Jake completed #5MarathonsIn5Days for Mental Health, Solidarity and Justice. This video gives a glimpse of the incredible community that came together to make the challenge possible.

🫂 30 people (and 2 dogs) joined them.
🥾 Together, they walked 584.26 miles in solidarity (equivalent to over 22 marathons).
🤝 24 organisations from across the country supported the challenge, alongside countless individuals, pubs, cafés and businesses who welcomed walkers as Sanctuary Stops.
🙏🏼 Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, encouraged, cooked, hosted, and joined the walkers on the route.

From the send-off at The Sanctuary, through the beautiful Peak District and local Sanctuary Stops, to the final miles into Sheffield and the community meal. Every part of this challenge was shaped by people coming together.

We all walked in #solidarity for Dr Pious Nyandoro, for everyone whose lives are harmed by a dehumanising asylum system, and for a future where people seeking sanctuary can live with dignity, safety and hope.

But we still need your help. We have over £2,000 left to raise to reach our £12,000 target. After everything this #fundraiser has achieved, let's reach (and smash) it. 🎯

National Week of Solidarity to End Immigration Detention | 19–25 October 📣

Every day, people are detained under immigration powers in the UK, often without knowing where they’re being taken or when they’ll be released.

Immigration enforcement has escalated, with raids, arrests and detentions rising sharply. The harm extends far beyond the person detained, affecting families, friends, neighbours and support networks left to provide care and keep fighting for justice. But our communities are also places of resistance and solidarity. ✊🏽

From 19–25 October, the National Week of Solidarity to End Immigration Detention brings people together to challenge detention and raise awareness of its devastating impact.

Building on last year’s National Day of Solidarity, this year’s expanded week of action includes demonstrations, community gatherings, solidarity picnics, workshops, film screenings (Everybody to Kenmure Street) and letter-writing sessions across the country. 📽️🧺

For people facing homelessness and asylum destitution, a safe place to sleep can be the first step towards rebuilding their lives.

Through our Community Fund, we recently awarded @assistsheffield £10,000 to support their vital work with people seeking sanctuary.

ASSIST provides safe accommodation, financial support, advocacy and casework, helping people move beyond crisis, build connections and work towards a more secure future.

As Jake Clarke from ASSIST Sheffield says:

“Once people can move beyond crisis and take their next steps, the benefits reach far beyond the individual.”

This funding will help ASSIST continue providing holistic support to people seeking sanctuary, helping them move towards a safe home, community and the freedom to thrive.

We're proud to announce our chosen charity for Blend:4 is @assistsheffield

ASSIST Sheffield works alongside people seeking sanctuary who have been made destitute by the asylum system, providing housing and support so people can live with dignity and freedom.

These individuals have fled war, persecution, and violence, yet after their claims are denied, they find themselves destitute and unable to work or access any benefits.

ASSIST offer solidarity, support & hope.
We are donating all profits from tiicket sales to ASSIST for all the incredible work they do in Sheffield, the first city of Sanctuary!

💚 9pm -11pm it is FREE entry in the ground floor bar area, we will have donation buckets if you'd like to donate.

💚 11pm-4am is ticketed basement entry

📣Our call is clear: the Government should introduce the right to work for people seeking asylum, allowing people to support themselves and reducing the need to rely on asylum support while their claims are considered.

At a time when hostility and violence towards people seeking sanctuary and migrants are unprecedented, and immigration detention is at historic levels, knowing your rights is more important than ever. 🪧

People seeking asylum are being housed in life-degrading former military sites, such as at Crowborough and Wethersfield, where prison-like conditions strip away human rights, isolate people from local communities and limit access to healthcare, legal advice and other vital support.

Against this backdrop, we held our first Know Your Rights workshop, bringing together 20 members and 10 volunteers to learn about immigration detention, share experiences and build knowledge. 💬

We’ll be running more sessions in the future, creating spaces to learn, ask questions and grow our solidarity. 🧡

Rooted in Pious’s life, work, solidarity and memory and shaped by the recent and tragic passing of our beloved comrade and former RJN trustee, Professor Jason Arday, this campaign seeks to turn remembrance into collective action.

As we remember both Pious and Jason, we want to create space to reflect together on *Black grief, racialised dehumanisation, and the political conditions in which our communities live and experience loss.*

At the launch, we’ll share the campaign’s aims, introduce our living campaign blueprint, and invite those present to help shape where the work goes next.

Expect food, time to connect, movement building, a roundtable discussion, storytelling, and collective discussion of the campaign blueprint.

Last week, two members of the ASSIST team, Luke and Jake (representing @beyondclimatecollaborative), joined various organisations and individuals all doing amazing work in Liverpool for the Climate, Migrant and Racial Justice Movement-Building Summit. 💬

Coordinated by the Climate & Migrant Justice Organising Group and convened by the @climatejustice_coalition , the two-day summit brought people together to strengthen the movements working across the intersections of climate, migrant and racial justice.

At ASSIST, we see these struggles intersect every day. The climate crisis is driving displacement and mobility, while migrant communities face growing racism, border violence and an increasingly hostile environment not only in this country but across the world. 🌍

We also see the power of community and resistance. The summit created space to organise, connect, celebrate and imagine the kind of movement we want to build. One rooted in racial justice, solidarity and joy. 🧡

The challenges are huge. But so is our collective power. ✊🏼

Also, a huge thank you to the organisers, all the session leads, and everyone working behind the scenes to make the summit happen. 🙏🏼
