Beautiful weekend of community, wild food and planning for post-apocalyptic futures with the southern members of @association_of_foragers
🐟🌸
Always grateful for the foraging community to show up in hard times, and bring laughter and silliness when its needed most (which is all of the time!)
🐟🌸
Inspiring visions of community orchards & food growing, secret dancing and, of course, foraging, with incredible meals made from sustainably-sourced wild food and drink.
🐟🌸
I provided a wild nod to another inspiring vision from @foragelondon regarding tiramisu (IYKYK) and enjoyed creating the "Foragers TiraMessOoh" which was a wild flavoured take on both tiramisu and eton mess made with chestnut sponge, nocino walnut liquor, sweet woodruff, dandelion & burdock root, green hogseed, wood avens, and wild mushrooms including ganoderma applanatum chai syrup and gummies 👌🤎😋
🐟🌸
Huge thanks to @walkingpaceonly and @the_female_forager for hosting, to @handpanbyanurag and @foragefrolics for music, and everyone else for coming, it was such a joy to spend this time together!

What happens when a bunch of foragers get together?

Fun, laughter, good food, misadventure 😆, connection, wild places, fireside drinks and sunset.

A glorious weekend spent based at @coastandcamplight and absolutely stunning off grid, rewilded glamping spot near Whitby. We explored the local area, caught up with good friends, had some hair-raising adventures, epic weather, wild drinks and food, wonderful sauna at @whitby.well.being and so much more.

A beautiful weekend of much needed connection ✨💚🌱

Gorgeous to see you all my fellow @association_of_foragers members @pickleandbrew @wild.pickle @carawayandsorrel @eduliswildfood @foragefrolics @amyrankineforager @thewhitbyforager @jimhasgonewild

And an extra special thanks to @wild_roots_foraging for all your organising ✨

What an incredible summer gathering @coastandcamplight - so many fellow foragers made it to this beautiful part of Yorkshire for a @association_of_foragers meet up 🧡

Special thanks to Lucy for organising it, Verity, Ed and all the beautiful souls that’s made it so special.

Stunning sunsets, waterfalls, live music, sauna and dip @whitby.well.being, sharing meals, brews & the odd tipple 🌱

Loved waking up early, chatting, watching the stunning barn owl fly over the unspoilt peaceful land. I was lucky enough to glamp - my first time, a comfy bed, a warm shower was perfect looked like I’d been dragged through a hedge by the end of the day but that’s what it’s all about…

I’ve never stood under a waterfall before, I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to cold water but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t. Such magical cleansing 💦

It was so precious to have some time to chat, chip in with creating some delicious meals & foster a sense of community that is missing in many of our lives.

Roll on the next one 🍄🌱🌸

(Thank you for the photos taken by @thewhitbyforager, @wild_roots_foraging & @the_wholesome_cumbrian - I spent a lot of time looking for my phone or trying to charge it up)

"Isn't it wonderful to be here and to connect with other foragers? I heard someone say it feels like Christmas," I said to her.

She came a bit closer and whispered, "It's better than Christmas!"

I met @incredible_edible__ at the annual meet-up at the @association_of_foragers She is originally from Poland but works in the UK for Incredible Edible, a project that began with foraging, but at its heart it has always been about being present and paying attention.

It never ceases to amaze me how much foraging and herbalism are matters of the heart. Complete strangers start talking about plants, their hearts open immediately, and the conversations run deep.

We talked about the importance of community and the omnipresence of foraging and herbalism in Poland compared to the UK and Belgium. We also touched upon traditions, intergenerational knowledge, and resilience, both the plants' and our own.

After 50 years foraging and teaching foraging and ecology I have been accepted into the @association_of_foragers looking forward to learning from and contributing to this group. This spring has been busier than ever and my summer programme is also looking pretty full.

Thank you @monicawilde and @lesley_kilbride for the nomination. I owe you both so much. And thanks @heatherebeaumont for the lovely photo of the super-green wood from our East Lothian, family-friendly foraging expedition last Saturday.

..The ones who feel too much are also the ones who see the most ...

Here's to the ones who spot the tiny mouse that lives in the crack of a crowded train platform during peak hour.

Those who feel overwhelmed at times, but recognise trees by the sound they make when the wind plays with them.

The ones who didn't hear the question, but saw the bee pollinating the hawthorn flower.

Here's to us, the canaries in the coalmine.

In part 2 of this 3-part special series that celebrate the 10th-anniversary of the Association Of Foragers, I talk with Liam O'Brian, UK-based foraging teacher, mushroom hunter, and wild food enthusiast specializing in educational walks and workshops focused on foraging, wildlife, and sustainable wild food. It's a conversation full of gems like this one.

Cooking with Fire 🔥🔥
Experimenting with multiple fire cooking techniques to make the most out of wild and foraged food.
🔥🔥
Whittling green twigs to toast real herbal marshmallows, baking damper bread rolls filled with wild garlic pesto, smoking feral oysters, roasting whole squash and beetroot direct on the coals, popping squash seeds with seasalt on a pan lid, tasting sweet wild hazel cakes, stirfrying sea beet and alexanders on the flames, digging pit roast for slow cooked squirrel and hare, reducing fresh birch sap to a smoky syrup on the fire.
🔥🔥
Rejuvenated by wild nutrients, fresh woodland air, culinary creativity, and the laughter and kindness of fellow foragers. Preparing for the fall of empire? If only it could be this easy. Hearts are heavy, and yet lightened by purpose. Free Free Free 💚✊️

🧄I love wild garlic, a lot! It’s one of my favourite plants to forage - abundant, versatile, healthy & delicious! From pesto to soups, it’s a springtime staple.

🌿 It’s arrival heralds the promise of spring, and gets me very excited about the lovely warm, light season that’s ahead!

🫙 And every year I find new & fabulous ways of preserving it to enjoy for a bit longer.

This year, I’m fermenting everything in sight, so it’s all about lacto-fermented wild garlic in my house right now. But I’ve also whizzed it into home-made butter, blitzed it with sea salt & dehydrated to store for winter, dried to sprinkle over pasta & salads, added to flat breads, scones, hummus... So many options!

Also just remembered a cocktail last year with wild garlic vodka…actually that one wasn’t for me!

But now I’m looking for new ideas…help me out, what’s the best thing you’ve done with it this year??

Birch Sap Rising 💞🌳
Have you felt the shift in seasons? It seems to catch me out every year. Settled in, as if it will be eternal winter.
💞🌳
But, there are hidden stirrings. Movements underground, which we cannot see. The sap is rising. This beautiful liquid moves up from roots to shoots, ready to awaken the tightly closed leaf buds, bursting into spring.
💞🌳
The sap of Birch trees is around 1% sugars, mainly fructose- a notable contrast in flavour, nutrients, and sugar content compared to the higher sucrose content found in the Maple tree which is made into Maple syrup, for example.
💞🌳
Rising sap has been drunk by humans for millennia, waking up the body after a winter's hibernation, full of nutrients, electrolytes, health benefitting compounds, and - when reduced to syrup- a vital source of sugars for energy.
💞🌳
Forages like this need to be done with respect and care. Understanding of the tree's lifecycle, and knowledge of how to access sap in a way which minimises impact. If you are new to this and are keen to try, please research the pruning / twig tap method.
💞🌳
We came together as a community of foragers, many of whom have worked together for years, and are a part of @association_of_foragers , to support each other in accessing sap for another round (round 3 for me!) of the upcoming wild food research study @wildbiomeproject , which is led by research herbalist @monicawilde this September.
💞🌳
How many bottles of maple syrup or other sugars have you bought so far in your lifetime? Have you considered the hard work and time which goes into making each bottle? Processing such a valuable product yourself from nature really brings it home the unseen labour in our everyday products. These Birch syrup jars are precious and will be used sparingly. Their value isnt in their cost but the time and effort put into their creation. Reconnecting to our place as humans in this world. A time for reflection. Thank you, Birch.
💞🌳

Last but not least: one of the founding members of the @association_of_foragers: Monica 'Mo' Wilde, @monicawilde. you may know her from the @wildbiomeproject or from one of her books (if you haven't read 'The Wilderness Cure' yet, you are missing out!).
I can listen to her for hours.
