The cold has definitely took hold in the North. Frosts in the morning. A beautiful array of colourful leaves 🍂 falling to the ground. A satisfying rustle.

The earlier mushrooms are on their way out, the hardier ones coming out, with trooping funnels, jelly ear and turkey tail amongst many others.

Shaggy’s back in my ever faithful fruiting spot (Coprinus comatus)

I absolutely love these shrooms, catch them quick before they deliquesce — that’s a beautifully fancy word for melting into an inky puddle! 🖤

I learnt the hard way a few years ago - harvested some that were just turning a little bit, got distracted (shock) left them in a net bag hanging from the staircase - oooops

🪶 Also called the Lawyer’s Wig because of their shaggy white frilly caps - isn’t mature mind blowing 🤯

🖋️ The black “ink” was once used as a writing ink!!! I have a jar ready for when I feel creative —

🍽️ They are best picked when they look like little white torpedoes

🍷 But here’s the catch… while Shaggy Ink Caps are fine to eat, their cousins, the Common Ink Caps (Coprinopsis atramentaria) can cause a reaction if you drink alcohol!

Always make sure you’ve got the right ID before tucking in.

Every autumn I tell myself I don’t need anymore Fly agaric photos, I have dozens and dozens. And every year I find a picture perfect one and I can’t resist. This is this year’s beauty.

These mushrooms ARE autumn. They are simply stunning and I love them. They’re having a bumper year too.

Hope you can get outside today and admire their beauty. You’ll feel better for it 🍄❤️

UPDATE: British Latin name is actually Sparassis brevipes - still the same thing and very rare.

Fabulous fungi find today - the very rare Sparassis spathulata! The scent from these beauties filled the air. Not for picking, just staring at lovingly. I love fungi!

Day 19 @wildbiomeproject 🍄🌱

Headed out for a quick walk and headed to a trusted spot. This season you’re never quite sure what you’ll find but the Panther caps (amanita pantherina) appeared in the same spot where we found them with @launderjesper a few years ago. So good to see 🌱

Some blusher neighbours close by & then into the woods to see a spectacle of fly agarics - just glorious.

These aren’t going on the pot!!! Pl be 💯 % certain with ID.

Today food wise was more of a tough uninspired day, the usual handful of wild nuts, leftover cold partridge and some wild hake without any greens. Today will be better 🍄‍🟫🌱🍄

Day 17 & 18 @wildbiomeproject 🌱

Some of the tastier of dishes on the wildbiome here. After my lucky find of giant puffballs I made a puffball steak - dipped in beaten egg ( I can have a chicken’s egg as a substitute if I find a 🪺 and there’s a few pigeon nests around)

I had a few fermented cherry plums, chickweed, yarrow and ground ivy on the side topping it with wild thyme flowers, Rosa rugosa petals & a drizzle@of honey - tastes a bit like eggy bread.

Then I made some puffball nuggets - spiced with seasalt and Alexander pepper served with pan fried partridge and an elderberry and damson ketchup. I’ve gone off venison completely, which is a shame because I’ve got some in the freezer. If I’m honest I never really enjoyed it - but needs must.

Been making some healing brews of rosehip, Rowan, mugwort, birch polypore & elderberry. Trying to raise the antioxidants and keep well.

The thing about living off wild food is the food chatter about what you may or may not fancy for your next meal goes away. The choice is practically removed from your diet and you eat what you forage or what you have managed to squirrel away. It can be really tough some days to get the calories , it’s important to eat fats and greens but the greens have been limited. Yes there are lots of young nettles, dandelion greens and cleavers coming back but eating wild food in autumn is so different. Good job I like mushrooms!

Finishes next week but still feels like a long way to go

Marsh Samphire !! 🌵🌵 my favourite Wild Edible Plant found in Salt Marshes around the west coast of Ireland in estuaries. Cook like asparagus and goes beautifully with fish.

Fantastic foraging afternoon yesterday - we found loads of Hen of the Woods (Grifola frondosa)! They grow on the ground at the base of oak trees and are named after the fluffy, feathery rear end of chickens.

These mushrooms are also known as Maitake, a Japanese word meaning “dancing mushroom”
- the lobes look similar to the traditional fans Japanese ladies would carry whilst dancing. Thanks to Akiko for telling me this (hope your knees aren’t too sore today).

Not a single Penny Bun but we did find a cauliflower fungus, field mushrooms and some perfect, young beefsteak fungus.

A huge “thank you” to everyone who came out on our foraging course yesterday - you were all lovely, enthusiastic and very friendly people. You made the afternoon very special 🍄‍🟫

This summer we ventured out into the big wild world to share our knowledge of wild food and foraging processes with hundreds of festival goers! Take a peek at our interactive stall with a...

- Wild market offering cordials, teas, dried fruits and fungi books
- Sensory display table with wild spices, seaweeds, Alexanders root starches, all sorts of nuts and fruits
- Native strain mushroom tincture library with @ffunga.native
- Guess the plant ID game
- Interactive seed processing station for all to have a go!
- Multiple foraging walks throughout the weekend @womadfestival including UV night walks, climate resilient foraging, wild plant songs, foraging for the apocalypse, gentle foraging and many more!

We have come together as an autonomous collective of foragers. We are members of @association_of_foragers which is a brilliant organisation supporting those who teach about wild food. We have also taken part in the @wildbiomeproject which saw us living off a fully wild diet for up to 3 months. Some of us have been working together for many years with @nomadicdinners , and many of us support each other in social and environmental justice activism. And so, a beautiful community has formed through a shared love of the wild and the urge to share our knowledge with others.
