Cosmic dust capturing pictures of other cosmic dust in Bortle 9 skies ✨
Main Account: @sidthesloth92
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
#astrophotography #space #galaxy I spent 90 minutes photographing what looks like an empty patch of sky. Then I removed the stars — and dozens of galaxies appeared. This is the Perseus Cluster, one of the most massive structures in the known universe, sitting 240 million light-years away. Every faint smudge in the second half of this reel is an entire galaxy with billions of stars. The light hitting my camera that night left home before dinosaurs walked the Earth!! taken in Copper Breaks State Park by @astrowithdb

The Horsehead Nebulae, Barnard 33, is one of my favorite nebulae. Travelled to a Bortle 2 site too capture it in RGB and combined it with Ha data that I had from last year to create this HaRGB composition.

Pacman Nebula in SHO Palette. Really loved the way it turned out in the end!! Let me know what you think!!!

The “Pac-Man Nebula,” also known as NGC 281, is a star-forming region in the constellation Cassiopeia, resembling the video game character Pac-Man. It’s characterized by a dark, dust-filled “mouth” and bright clouds of glowing gas. NGC 281 is located about 9,200 light-years away

Lion Nebula in HOO. This was very difficult capture from Bortle 9. But love how the colors have come out :)

Located roughly 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus, Sh2-132 is an emission nebula shaped by the intense radiation and stellar winds of two Wolf-Rayet stars, WR 152 and WR 153. These massive, short-lived stars ionize the surrounding hydrogen and oxygen, carving the structure that gives the nebula its distinctive lion-like profile.

That faint smudge drifting across the frame? That’s Andromeda — an entire galaxy of a trillion stars, 2.5 million light-years away. The light hitting my camera sensor left before humans existed. And you can see it with your naked eye under a dark sky.

Ever wonder why the Milky Way looks like a band instead of a swirl? Because we’re inside the disk, looking through it edge-on — like standing in a crowd and seeing a wall of people. Seven seconds of Earth spinning under 100 billion stars.

The last time our solar system was on this side of the galaxy, dinosaurs hadn’t evolved yet. One galactic year = 230 million Earth years. Enjoy the commute. ✨

One of the questions that I most often get asked is, how does the sky the sky look like in dark sky parks??? Well, this is a video that I took in copper break State Park, which is a Bortle two sky, and this is how the sky looks like to the naked eye.

Why do I travel 3hours and 180miles/300 kms to a dark sky site?

Under Bortle 9 skies, light pollution drowns out faint nebulosity so badly that capturing a target can take 40+ hours of exposure time. Under Bortle 1 skies? The same result in just 2-3 hours.

But we are losing dark skies at a record rate. Light pollution is growing ~10% every year, and most people alive today have never seen the Milky Way with their own eyes.

Dark skies are a natural resource. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. We need to preserve them at all costs. 🌠

The Cygnus Wall, roughly 20 light-years long. If you placed it where the Orion Nebula sits in the sky, it would be a naked-eye showpiece. Instead, at ~2,600 light-years away with very low surface brightness, the whole nebula spans four full moons of sky yet most people have never seen it without a camera.

The star that lights it up was a mystery for nearly a century. Everyone assumed Deneb powered the North America Nebula, but the true ionizing star — nicknamed the Bajamar Star (J205551.3+435225) — hides behind the dark dust lane that forms the “Gulf of Mexico.” It wasn’t confidently identified until relatively recently, because the dust dims its light by several magnitudes. So the star creating the glow in your image is literally invisible in your image.
