Looking back at neworks - Destruction Bureau with ASYA ASHMAN & BELMON / THERESE BENDJUS

Thank you to @dancewithlav @tui.bth & an anonymous guest for your thoughts and perspectives!

The studio writer position at ada Studio has been existing since 2013. It was born out of the lack of publications of texts about dance in the feuilleton and gave the person who accompanied the performances at ada Studio for one year as a writer the opportunity to take a look at the artists and their works from their perspective and share it. After 12 years, we think it’s time for a change and also for a different form of publishing. During our research, we came across the @danceperformancetheatre channel on Instagram, met the owner Clara Dünnebeil and received permission to bring this wonderful format to ada Studio in an expanded form.

From August 2025, a total of 3 studio writers from different professional fields will publish their short texts: sharing impressions and thoughts about the performances at ada Studio. The aim is not reviews, but spontaneous comments and snapshots. The guiding principles are: appreciation for the work of the artists, honesty in sharing thoughts and an open and respectful exchange. taken in Uferstudios Für Zeitgenössischen Tanz by @asya_ash

THE ANTHEM ist ein Tanzstück von Asya Ashman und ihren Kollaborator*innen. Inspiriert von der Struktur von Darudes Sandstorm (1999) – einer Eurodance-Hymne, die einst mit euphorischer, grenzüberschreitender Einheit assoziiert war – zerlegt das Stück Erwartungen an Aufbau und Höhepunkt und fragt, was bleibt, wenn der „Drop“ ebenso wie eine imaginierte Zukunft niemals eintritt.

Das Stück entfaltet sich als hypnotischer Prozess des Ent-Aufbauens durch Wiederholung, Erschöpfung und sich verändernde Beziehungen zum Publikum. Es untersucht Integration und Desintegration als verkörperte Zustände innerhalb einer fragmentierten soziopolitischen Realität.
‍Verwurzelt im Whacking, einer Tanzform aus der queeren Clubkultur der 1970er Jahre, und geprägt von Ashmans Erfahrung als Migrantin, sucht THE ANTHEM nach Formen von Präsenz, in denen Zerfall zum Boden für neue Rhythmen und Koexistenz.

Gefördert durch die Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt des Landes Berlin.

THE ANTHEM is a dance piece by Asya Ashman, premiering in February 2026 at @ballhausprinzenallee. Inspired by the structure of Darude’s Sandstorm (1999), a Eurodance anthem once associated with euphoric cross-border unity, the work dismantles expectations of build-up and climax, asking what remains when the “drop”, just like an imagined future, never arrives.

Welcome to Destruction Bureau!
We are currently at @ada.uferstudios residency exploring the destruction of dance by artistic and structural means.

In preparation for our open-studio this Friday in Berlin we share some highlights from our previous research episodes.

After our collaboration with the forces of San Bernardino river, we opened our office at @casaceretti.caffetteria for a public sharing. Besides kicking off the founding of our Company Destruction Bureau, we embodied the trajectory of extractivism from mountain to stone to city monument asking: Which narrative of peace and memory holds priority?
We made our dancing disappear.
We commercialized our dancing.
We self-sabotaged our dancing.
