Mapping out public spaces in pen on tracing paper by @at.aarch

The balancing act’ theatre explores design through both the narrative and the relationship to the spatial intention of seen and unseen. This open space hides behind a reimagined facade which celebrates the existing site’s structure whilst closing off the main thresholds from the public. It hosts a play within the structure, which derives from a short story booklet written for this project called ‘fragments of a home’. These stories explore feminism through the spaces of a home - the kitchen, the livingroom, the bedroom, the bathroom and the dining room. These set’s then sit as an installation within the theatre, accesible for all. An exploded home, a safe place, a creative space, a celebration of privacy, an expose of females lives.

Amy Graduated from the bartlett with a bsc in Architecture and during her time in RCA has explored interior design through the arts. This includes through making, drawing and writing. She thinks spatially in her mind and is learning how to translate this into her work during her time at the RCA. Stories mean a lot in driving design, focusing on things that would aid stories such as sets and props. Other than stories, her exploration is always asking the question of ‘what is the balance?’ Questioning creates unique perspectives to explore and that which was explored this year is of thresholds, balance of privacy and the public and how art can aid design and vice versa.
