I’m so honored to be apart of this beautiful body of work. Thank Dr.J for the opportunity and thank you to Dr. Jones and Dr. Butler for the work you do. 📚

Mental Health and the Black Man: A Mixtape Experience of Hardship and Harmony breaks new ground by weaving together the cultural expressions of Black American music and other forms of artistic expression with the psychological experiences of Black men. Like a carefully curated mixtape, the book blends academic research with personal narratives, creating a powerful soundtrack to understanding the underpinnings and nuances of Black male mental health.

Each chapter opens with rigorous academic analysis before transitioning into authentic personal stories, mirroring the structure of a mixtape as it moves between different moods and messages. The book examines critical issues affecting the mental wellness of Black men: historical trauma, police encounters, the school-to-prison pipeline, and continuous traumatic stress disorder. It also celebrates sources of healing and strength: restorative practices, mentorship, fatherhood, the Black Church, and the radical therapeutic power of hip-hop culture.

From educational environments to marriage and community support, this collection offers a comprehensive view of Black men’s mental health experiences. Essential reading for students, scholars, practitioners, and anyone seeking to understand the multifaceted intersections of Black men, this book offers hope, empathy, and actionable insights for supporting Black men’s psychological wellness through culturally responsive and enriching approaches.

As I continue to grow, I hope to inspire others to take the leap and follow your heart! My latest interview with Voyage LA Magazine is live now- link in bio

Happy Friday 🤲🏽

❤️Just a gentle reminder to pause, check In with yourself and sloooowwww down. Not a popular choice in today’s world of grind and hustle culture. We all have much to do, but nothing can be done well if you’re not operating at your best. Being an entrepreneur, I know the lists of tasks seem endless but always remember, it will get done. And in regular adulting, life can feel overwhelming. Here’s a simple cheat code:

❤️Place your left hand on your heart, close your eyes, and take 1 deep inhale through your nose hold for 4 count, deep exhale through your mouth for 8 count.

❤️Repeat as necessary… now carry on.

Reflecting on my conversation with Lisane a year ago, describing my first dark night of the soul moment I had at 30 years old. Five years into my amazing music career and realizing all that shines ain’t gold. Little did I know then, I would have more deep, soul searching moments every decade thereafter. For every obstacle, heartbreak and challenging moments, there is always growth, resilience, wisdom and joy that follows. Thank you to my village of friends that love me through every version of myself.

I guess this is what adulting is 😊
