Cringe presents… ASK AN EXPERT #14: Eddy Janchinorat, owner of @famouseddy120

If you’ve driven past this strip of Dominion Rd at dinner time, you’ve probably spotted the crowds of people outside Famous Eddy, a corner spot where a line often forms from people waiting to dine on pasta, steak and fried chicken. Inside, there’s an undeniable diner vibe: no fuss, maximum flavour. Famous Eddy is most known for creamy garlic and rosé pasta sauces — and you should, by the way, make sure to drizzle some of their tasty chilli oil on top (it goes with everything).

This week, @_sam_low_ asks Eddy about his favourite places for cookies and donuts, date night spot, where he’d go to impress an out of-tower, and more.

Eddy recommends:

Restaurants: @kiinthai, @giltbrasserie, @pici.krd, @bianca.akl
Cafes/Bakeries: @edenespressobar, @blackdrop_eatery, @smallmercies_nz

Cringe presents… ASK AN EXPERT #12: Amy, co-owner of @kookoo.nz and sister restaurant @rosros_everyday, and Hugo, head chef at ROSROS

Those who live near Dominion Rd can attest to the fact the area was sorely lacking in Korean options for a long time — which was why we were so happy when KOOKOO opened its doors in 2024. Get a half or whole roast chicken on a sizzling plate, drenched in rose cream, corn cheese, bulgogi or more, sat on a bed of sticky rice. We like their sides, too: tofu kimchi, savoury egg custard, seafood pancakes.

Also check out their newer restaurant ROSROS in North Shore’s Birkenhead!

This week, Sam @_sam_low_ asks Amy and Hugo about where they’d take someone from out of town, their favourite cheap and cheerful, and more.

Amy & Hugo recommend:

Restaurants: @yuzu_japanese_restaurant, @den_ramenbar, @eat.at.alma, @bossi.co.nz, @mrmorrisnz, @kiinthai
Takeaway: @happyvietnamesekingsland
Bakery: @mibo_bakery
Coffee: @dailydailycoffee
Bars: @caretaker.nz

HELLLOOOOO! We’re back from the dead — i.e. here’s a new episode we recorded about the MICHELIN GUIDE 2026, the first-ever in Aotearoa New Zealand. 110 restaurants were recognised from four cities around the country, so a huge congratulations to them all! It’s a Big Deal, and we are v happy for them!

But here’s the real question… what did we think?

In this episode, we talk about our initial reactions to The List, who were the biggest surprises, who were the biggest snubs, and we, once again, go back and forth about the merits of having Michelin in New Zealand. And don’t you worry, we dedicate a good amount of airtime to the ASIAN RESTAURANT PROBLEM (or lack thereof).

Elsewhere, we also talk about Wellington’s food scene (where Jean is temporarily living), and food trends that we’re noticing, since this is the first episode of 2026. OOOOPPS!

P.S. Sam was on the ground (i.e. at the awards) while Jean was at Schapiro’s doing a pub quiz (her team, Oat Milk Flat White, got fifth), but cannot confirm or deny whether she tagged in as the Michelin Man later in the night.

Love,
Jean and Sam by @ate.ate.ate.pod

Cringe presents… ASK AN EXPERT #9: Albert Yen, owner of @dailydailycoffee

We are long-time Daily Daily callers here at Cringe, being big fans of this small, perfect slice of Karangahape Rd. You can get a 6oz flat white (Albert’s drink of choice), or a manual brew, made using beans from both local or international roasters. This may, actually, have been the first place Jean ever purchased a pour over in Tāmaki Makaurau. Possibly true for many of us?

This week, Sam @_sam_low_ interviews Albert about where he goes to have a cup on his days off, where he eats (dictated more recently by being a dad to two young kids) and where he likes to pop in for a cheap and cheerful.

Albert recommends:

Coffee: @holiday.uptown & @holiday.downtown
Restaurants: @pici.krd (this may be Pici’s fourth mention!); @parro_akl, @oohfa__, @junoauckland, @edennoodles, @paasha_turkish_kitchen
Bakeries: @beabeas.bakery, @mor__bakery, @lavoiefrancaise
Sweet: @bear_gelato, @littlelato

Cringe presents… ASK AN EXPERT #8: Jorge & Andrea, co-owners of @sagradocantina

Sagrado Cantina is a relative newbie to the St Kevin’s line-up, but in the year or so since they’ve opened the restaurant has become much loved for its tacos, tostadas, margaritas, mole and more (Jean’s favourite is the pork carnitas, dollop generously with v spicy sauce!)

This week, Sam @_sam_low_ asks these two where their favourite bars are, their favourite restaurants, and, of course, where they go for tacos.

Jorge & Andrea recommend:

Eateries: @tempero.akl, @pici.krd, @lebanesegrocer
Tacos: @tacoteca_, @elcapos_tacos
Bars: @definitelymaybe.akl, @bar_magda, @achos_official
Bakery: @copain_nz
Dessert: Soufflé at @aperokrd

If you’ve ever dined at Apéro, you’ll probably have met Mo. A beloved hospo personality (he’s even won awards for it), Mo co-owns Apéro with partner and chef Leslie Hottiaux (who is also award-winning FYI!!).

In this week’s episode, @_sam_low_ wants to know what Mo’s favourite restaurants are, his go-to places for a cup of coffee, and the best bakeries in Auckland (according to him).

Mo recommends:

Restaurants: @cocoro_restaurant, @eatupbeasty, @cocoscantina
Bakeries/Cafes: @coffee_pen_, @goodtime_nz, @lavoiefrancaise
Affordable eats: @edennoodles
Sweet treat: Specifically the pecan butterscotch flavour at @duckislandicecream

We 💙 The Frog at Cringe!! In this week’s episode, our host @_sam_low_ asks these two experts (clock Tane’s face when Sam calls them experts lol) where they go to have a glass of wine on their off days, chow down on a cheap and cheerful, get a little sweet treat and more.

Robbie & Tane recommend:
