MONSTRIFICATION | BRONZE
Who decides what isn’t monstrous?
For this final look we turned to the myth of Pygmalion, ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’ by Philip K Dick, and ‘A Hero With A Thousand Faces’ by Joseph Campbell. With the other looks, they are more fixated on the ‘monster’ itself but this look we shift our attention to the creator of those monsters. The ones who build the tests that need to be passed. Bronze was chosen for the obvious symbol of a Bronze statue, and it is the first alloy of metal made.

This look was my first one that really like crystallized for me in my mind. A bronze statue but more modern take on one. The top is 300gsm Cotton for the long sleeve shirt and faux Sherpa for the quarter zip. The pants were a fun herringbone denim I found. All of it was painted with Jacquard Metallic Textile Paint to give it that more like bronze statue effect.

MONSTRIFICATION | SILVER
Whose account is treated as credible?
This look was inspired by the myth of Cassandra, ‘Death of the Author’ by Nnedi Okorafor, and ‘Illness as a Metaphor’ by Susan Sontag. With these works it was really interesting to look at who’s given permission to be perceived as truthful and how that credibility is its own form of power. Silver, which was used in mirrors and early photography, was a natural choice to go with these works.

This dress was definitely my challenging piece. The fabric is gorgeous but stubborn and the Chainmail was a labor of love. It was work it though to see on the final piece. The dress is a mirror like TPU fabric with two 60” zippers on the sides. Chainmail was done in aluminum from theringlord.com.

MONSTRIFICATION | COPPER
Who constructs what a body is?
This look was inspired by the myth of Arachne, ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelly, and ‘A Cyborg Manifesto’ by Donna Haraway. With these texts we get a lot of exploration in what defines a body, who constructs it, and discussions around the autonomy of that construction. I chose copper for this look because it is the metal most used in construction- for homes, electronics, and tools. It changes and conducts and shows its age.

This one had some challenges lol. If I get to go back I do want to redo the egg structure to make it a little more solid. However I wanted something light and collapsible so it worked well for this. Chelsea was a trooper with this one lol.

The dress is a curtain I got from savers, most likely a polyester tweed. Then a pleated synthetic fabric and moldable copper wire for the egg.

Monstrification | GOLD
Who decides who is classified as Monstrous?
This look was inspired by the myth of Icarus, ‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare, and ‘Humans: A Monstrous History’ by Dr. Surekha Davies. With these texts it was really interesting to explore the dynamics of who has the power to classify others as monstrous. I chose Gold for this look since it is the metal of empire - of both tradition and conquest.

This look came out exactly like I had envisioned it and I am so happy about it. Jeffery absolutely brought it to life 🥰 The top is canvas and like 24 yards of painted feather trim. The bottom is a 99% cotton, 1% Lycra blend.

For most of my Sewing I use a Singer 401a that my grandmother got in the 1950s that has been passed down. Post show she needed a really good clean, re-oiling, and a new needle. Took me the entirety of Zootopia 2 but she’s now shiny and ready for whatever comes next 🥰
