A finished look at “Not a Tugboat” in Royston Park 📸

There’s a softness to this Art Deco house that reveals itself the closer you look.

The brief was to give a growing family much more room without overpowering the scale and character of the original house.

Our answer was curves. They run through the new extension, from the exterior form to the openings and the transitions between rooms. Brick and stone carry through to the interior, linking old and new.

Some of our favourite architectural details are the quietest ones:
➡️ A circular skylight drawing daylight deep into the house
➡️ A rounded junction where brick meets plaster
➡️ Thoughtful joinery details, adding the element of surprise.

Together, they give “Not A Tugboat” its own identity while still deferring to the original Art Deco architecture.

This one's close to our heart. It's a love letter to 29 Stuart Road, Dulwich, our studio out front and our home tucked in behind.

After 10 years and much deliberation, it's going to auction on Friday 16 October. 💙

This place gave us a business and a whole lot more. We've sketched plenty of ideas for what could happen next here, and the plans are ready to view, so if you can see the potential, come and have a look. But for us, a sea change is on the horizon, as we design Siren's Call. Some of you have been following along, and there's lots more to come.

AtelierBond is staying put in spirit too: we're on the hunt for a new studio, ideally in Adelaide's east or inner south. If you know of an interesting space, we'd love to hear from you. Just send us a DM.

📍 29–29A Stuart Road, Dulwich SA 5065

It’s handover day for “Not a Tugboat” in Royston Park, and it’s a flurry of activity to finish off the last few elements 🤝🏼

Our clients loved their little Art Deco house, but with a growing family, they needed more space.

Their one very specific request? Please, no tugboats.

They’d seen too many additions to Art Deco homes overwhelm the original architecture, so the challenge was to create a home extension that made the house bigger without losing its proportions, character or charm.

The result respects the language of the original Art Deco architecture, while giving the family the space they needed.

And, categorically, it’s not a tugboat 🚢

Behind the name: “Classic with a Twist” 🍸

This St Peters home already had beautiful bones and ornate original details, so the new home extension was never about starting again.

Instead, our residential architects took cues from the language of the existing home and introduced a contemporary layer that complements it without trying to replicate it.

Like a classic cocktail, the foundations were already strong. The twist is what brings something more personal to the mix.

Working with natural stone means leaving a little room for the unexpected 🪄

For “Not a Tugboat”, the interior palette began with the stone. Early in the architectural design process, the material coming from the quarry was green, so the surrounding colours and finishes were developed from there.

By the time the slabs were secured for the kitchen island design, the stone had shifted noticeably towards blue.

As the clients loved this specific stone, rather than forcing the original palette to work, we adapted it. Paint colours, joinery and other material selections evolved with the stone, allowing those new tones to carry through the interior in a way that still felt cohesive.

That’s part of what we love about natural materials in interior design. The variation brings warmth and character, but it also asks you to respond to the material in front of you rather than designing everything to a fixed formula.

The result might not be 100% true to the first design intent, but in this case, we think it’s better for it.

When our clients Anna and Mike Thyssen began planning the renovation of “Icing on Top”, they weren’t looking for design for design’s sake.

Their 1927 Millswood home had beautiful original bones, but years of ad hoc additions had left parts of it underused, the flow felt pokey in places, and it wasn’t making the most of the way their family actually lived.

Anna’s brief was refreshingly practical: more storage, a better entry and a straightforward layout.

Rather than treating those needs as secondary to the architecture, they became part of the architectural design process.

When the project moved into construction, Anna and Mike also chose AtelierBond to manage the contract. With work and family commitments already demanding plenty of their time, that continuity became a big part of the experience.

As Anna puts it: “I just felt very informed… I don’t think I could have done it without them.”

A finished look at “Icing on Top” in Millswood ✨

This project was about making a beautiful 1927 Adelaide house renovation work harder for the family living in it, while holding onto the character that made it special in the first place.

The new addition brings together some of our favourite architectural details from the project: five skylights over the kitchen, a natural stone plinth running through the living and dining spaces, warm timber, pared-back joinery and a stronger connection between the home, pool and tennis court.

Elsewhere, the restored return verandah, original formal rooms and contemporary new spaces sit comfortably alongside one another, creating the kind of indoor-outdoor living and everyday flow the house had been missing.

The brief for “Icing on Top” was clear from the beginning: no modern white box.

Homeowners Anna and Mike Thyssen wanted an addition that respected the scale and character of their 1927 Millswood home, while making it work far better for the way their family lives now.

In response, we designed the new home extension to complement the original house without imitating it.

That thinking carries through the architectural details, from the dark brickwork and steel-framed windows and doors to the custom joinery throughout.

Better than a standard white box? We’d say so.

One skylight can bring in more light – five can completely change a space ☀️

When an addition sits on the southern side of a home, bringing in enough northern light can become one of the biggest design challenges.

By spreading natural light across the space, this skylight design helps create brighter, more evenly distributed light throughout the day.

It’s a good example of how natural light in home design can be used strategically, rather than simply as a decorative feature.

For “Icing on Top”, the biggest design moves strived to make the home work better for the family living in it.

The existing pool was relocated from the far side of the house to sit between the new addition and tennis court, creating a much stronger connection between the home and outdoor spaces.

Inside, an oversized master bedroom was reworked with a central dressing area to improve its proportions, create more privacy and form a natural transition into the ensuite.

And one of the most important changes was restoring the return verandah, which had been enclosed in an earlier addition, back into the fabric of the original home.

It’s a home extension shaped by better flow, stronger indoor-outdoor living and a real respect for what was already there.

Afternoon sun floods through this light-filled Millswood character home renovation. A once dark and dated bungalow has been transformed into a bright, functional family home.

Nods to the home’s 1920s heritage are found throughout, from the 1927 bar tucked into the cupboard to the original chandeliers still hanging in the front formal rooms.

A first look at “Icing on Top” in Millswood 🫴🏼

This 1927 home had stately character and fantastic bones from the beginning. What it needed was a more considered way of bringing those elements together for the family living here now.

The new home extension resolves the flow of the house, brings more light into the everyday living spaces and reconnects the home with the pool, tennis court and restored return verandah.

Rather than compete with the original architecture, the new work was designed to complement it, adding warmth, function and a more contemporary layer – and the dark brick course was just the icing on top.

More from this Adelaide house renovation coming soon.
