मिट्टी सोने का ताज पहन इठलाती है;

The cold, extinguished ash of centuries has come alive and it stirs,
the soil struts, wearing a golden crown.
Step aside, listen to the roar of the chariot of time
Vacate the throne, the people are coming.
- Ramdhari Singh Dinkar

An essay on October by my late friend Hemanshu, @davincicurator. Yesterday marked ten months since his passing. I haven’t watched October yet, I don’t think I ever will now, but his work deserves to be read. Rest in Peace fella. I remember you on every fifth. I know you love mountains, I see them out the balcony every day lately. You’re above those tall mountains somewhere and we’ll laugh at some memes sometime. by @atharvcore

The frost, it looks
Like dust settled on the world
After everyone's long been gone
But me, I was hidin'
Or forgotten, the only one left
Now the world is mine alone

With no one, no one
To share the memory of frost
Out the window this morning
After you're gone
And the house is mine alone

You're my best friend
Now I've no one to tell
How I lost my best friend
The frost, it looks
Like we've been left in the attic
But you're not here to see
It's just witness-less me

The Cockroach and the Chicken: Asia's Gen Z Finds New Languages of Revolt

This summer, I spent some time in Indonesia, finishing a course at a university in Yogyakarta. On the evening of June 11, as I was on a walk with a friend, I encountered a group of students in the square in front of the university. It was a demonstration, a black-feathered chicken was kept in the middle of the pavement as a part of a ceremonial gear - around it were printed portraits of the Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, scattered flowers, a smoking pot of incense, and a knife laid flat on the pavement.

The audience of university students was invited to speak up before the ritual - and soon, a shaman performed the sacrificial ritual - he beheaded the chicken and threw it at a distance, a blessed egg was cracked on top of the ritual material - the shaman smeared the blood of the chicken on the portraits of the president and vice-president and on his own face. This demonstration was held in the opposition of the Indonesian government in the light of a hike in fuel prizes - in a broad range of .

In Kyoto Review for South Asia, Agus Trihartono explains how the shamanic rituals (like black-feathered chicken sacrifices) sit within the Indonesian tradition of using shamans as instruments of political contestations, particularly for politicians competing for power. However in the case of the student demonstration, it was used against those in power by a group of unhappy citizens.

Indonesia’s protest reminds me of some similar patterns of youth frustration as Nepal, Bangladesh, and India. The “Gen-Z”s are frustrated and aware of those who hold power above them, and this power gets contested, reshaped and reimagined in the streets through direct and unconventional confrontations. The protesting Gen-Zs don’t wait for elections to see change - they look for mediums and trigger points : Bangladesh had a social media ban, Indonesia had a massive budget cut in education and infrastructures, and India had a NEET paper leak.
