Atharva Salve (UG ’27) from the Arts and Culture desk reports from Yogyakarta on a student protest that took an unconventional form: a shamanic ritual involving a black-feathered chicken, performed as a protest against the Indonesian government.

Tracing the ritual alongside the wider wave of youth-led protests across Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, Atharva explores how Gen Z is finding new languages, symbols, and spaces through which to express political discontent.

Student activists Anjali & Abhigyan reflected on the CJP Protests, NEP and the politics of education today in their yesterday, moderated by Partho.

This important conversation was witnessed by around 50 students. The topics revolved around democratic backsliding, saffronisation and privatisation of public education, and the pressing questions of employment, education, mental health and social justice in the current day and age. What’s clear through this conversation is that education, the university and the resignation of a minister is not one singular event, it is a product of accumulated anger in the people over the past ten years. These issues are deeply political and affect every aspect of our society, even if some of us sit in the comfortable private sphere of Ashoka. We hope the talk moved you, made you ask uncomfortable questions and reminded you of what the country witnessed over the past two months and beyond.

Thank you comrades @anjali_du_ and @abhigyan_aisa for joining us.

Atharva Salve (UG ’27) from the Arts and Culture Desk writes about how the Jantar Mantar protests unfolded not only on the streets, but also across digital spaces; through internet shutdowns, surveillance technologies, platform restrictions, doxxing, and the ways protesters adapted to stay connected and keep organising.

The 37-day CJP sit-in at Jantar Mantar ended with Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. Seven artists tell Local Samosa what it was like to draw through the crackdown and the win, and why their cartoons and animations are still circulating now.
