We’re thrilled to introduce our first three panellists for Saturday’s conversation: THE SOUND SYSTEM AS AN ECOSYSTEM Get to know Athi Maq, Matt Hichens and Lenaya! 🫧 Athi Maq is a Cape Town-based DJ renowned for her eclectic music selection and vibrant energy behind the decks. Her sound effortlessly spans eras and genres, blending upbeat tempos with a playful, dynamic flair. Athi’s ability to craft an immersive musical journey has earned her a spot on stages at major festivals and high-profile brand launches, making her a sought-after name in South Africa’s music scene. Whether for an intimate crowd or a festival, Athi Maq’s sets celebrate rhythm, creativity, and joy. 🫧 Responsible for many of your best nights out, Chocolate Sinclair (aka Matt Hichens) is a passionate lover of all things music. His involvement in the local scene with over 15 years of experience includes his expertise and eye for detail on various projects and spaces such as Button Bashers, The Other Records/Radio, Yours Truly and SWIM. In January 2022, he opened One Park — a Listening Bar and hub for culinary pop-ups, quiz nights, live performances, arts and more. Welcoming people, collectives and projects of all ages, backgrounds and tastes, One Park has been playing a pivotal role in uniting Cape Town’s and South Africa’s creative scene. 🫧 Lenaya is known for her deep appreciation of percussive and bass-heavy sounds. With a belief in the power of intentional curation and collaboration she’s the driving force behind COCOON, an initiative for knowledge transfer focusing on sound, fostering an environment for creativity, skill-sharing and community. In the beginning of 2024, she co-founded Bumble – a club night celebrating the expansive spectrum of electronic bass music, encouraging artists to explore its many interpretations. For her sound is not just entertainment; it’s a profound tool for community building and a powerful form of resistance.
