Becoming a great coach means learning from other coaches. No one becomes an expert without learning from those who walked before them. Continued education is essential if you want to be #morethanjustacoach grateful for those who freely share their knowledge with me when I ask. Let's come together to create better opportunities for the next generation. by @athleticedu

5 Drills ALL Hurdlers Need 📚

✔️Isolated Lead and Trail Drills
✔️Quick Step Drills (Low and Close)
✔️Push Drills (1 hurdle, walk in)
✔️Bounding (To teach push)
✔️1 Step Drill (Lead and Trail)

Push Drills under a stick teaches athletes to push THROUGH the hurdle without losing velocity. This also teaches athletes (if taught correctly) to lead with a BENT lead knee which propels rather than impedes forward motion. Pushing under the stick forces hurdlers to push past the fear of going fast and low over hurdles. It will always be the ultimate game changer for me!

Check out this slide from the @usatf Level 2 YOUTH handbook. Something most youth clubs do not always consider when dishing out huge amounts of volume to prepare athletes for races that require 95% MAX exertion. 6-12 x 200, or 400m "pace work," might be doable for young athletes, but if intensities do not remain high followed by adequate recovery, we simply prepare athletes to develop aerobic power rather than "speed".

What am I saying?
• understanding time is more important than understanding distance
• Applying adequate recovery in relation to the time it takes to complete a rep, and the amount of intensity applied, is 🔑 to yielding SPECIFIC adaptation.
• If the systems are overly taxed, one of two things can occur; 1. The body is too tired to achieve 95% intensity which changes the category of the workout and the types of adaptation that is possible. OR 2. Fatigue rather than capacity is the main outcome.

What am I NOT saying?
• Athletes need 30 minutes of rest between reps.
• Longer runs don't develop capacity
• Running longer than 7 seconds won't make athletes faster. by @athleticedu

It's time to trust science and commit to development. Click the link in my bio to download FREE SPEED WORKOUTS 📓📝and considerations for improvements in the sprints.

In 12 years of coaching, I spend most of my time fixing things. I have witnessed so many athletes plateau or experience minimal improvements throughout their entire high school careers due to massive training volumes, coaches misunderstanding of the energy systems, a lack of speed and technical work, and poor annual planning.

Although the resources and clinics are there, thousands of athletes nation wide fall through the cracks every year and never reach their full potential.

What is at the root of the pervasive presence of poor coaching in track and field? Here is my opinion:

✔️Ego based rather than knowledge and science based coaching
✔️Uneducated athletic directors who don't understand the needs of the sport
✔️Low funding for athletics and minimal coaching stipends to hire qualified professionals
✔️The idea that being fast in high school or collage makes one a good coach
✔️The idea that the 400 is a distance race 🫣
✔️Youth programs that only allow fast kids to run the sprints and overtrain athletes for years and years
✔️Scarce or ineffective education programs for coaches

What is the solution? EDUCATION!
AthleticEdu is committed to educating coaches and athletes so we don't continue to keep repeating the same mistakes. So that good coaches have a platform to be recognized and celebrated, and science can move into the center of track and field at the high school level. by @athleticedu

FUN FACT TIME! 🤩
1. I DIDN'T START HURDLING UNTIL MY FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE.
2. I LIKE THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY FACE BETTER THAN MY LEFT FOR SELFIES 😃
3. WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT COACHING IS GETTING TO KNOW THE ATHLETES I COACH BEYOND THEIR TRACK AND FIELD ABILITIES. AT THE END OF THE DAY, TRACK IS ONLY ONE PART OF LIFE AND I WILL SUPPORT ANY ATHELTE TO DO WHATEVER MAKES THEM TRULY HAPPY EVEN IF THAT MEANS FINDING A NEW PASSION.
