SI SE PUEDE! The Safe Space to Learn Coalition made an appearance at yesterday’s school board meeting to push for ICE protections of families and students as well as teacher trainings in DeKalb County Schools. Discussion of the policy was removed from the agenda for this session and a reading of the policy draft is supposed to happen in August. It is our expectation that DeKalb County Schools will be prepared to support our community by the time the school year starts.

Teacher and student members from the Atlanta chapter of the Association of Raza Educators joined parents and organizers from @wearecasa_org, @asianaaf, and coalition partners to give public comment. ARE teacher organizer Pahla spoke up on the impact it has had on her students and the need for teachers to be ready. ARE student committee member Nancy spoke about the horrible experience of ICE detaining her father and supported the passage of a Safe Space to Learn policy.

Organizers and teachers from @escuelitasonbuhi and @atl.are joined our compas at XITO in Tucson to dive into decolonial ethnic studies teaching using XITO’s TIAHUI and @liberated_ethnic_studies models.

Escuelitas and ATL ARE organizer @buhi_educator gave a workshop to discuss the ethnic studies of the Global U.S. South framework that guides his own and the Escuelitas teaching model. He also modeled @teach_change’s Teaching Central America’s lessons and resources to build solidarity with Central Americans and the Central American studies movement. Escuelitas organizer @hopeless_ro.mantic shared about their EscueliTaxi transportation network for our neighbors that embodies the ethos of mutual aid and community support behind Escuelitas.

The ATL ARE crew got to meet with our compas from @raza_educators_la chapter to share wisdom and grow our LA-ATL connection. We are developing ourselves as ethnic studies educators, organizers, and we are building solidarity across the continent and across difference for collective liberation.

We held our first Cine Escuelitas movie screening and chat with directors and community leaders! We screened three homegrown films followed by a community discussion.

-Nuestra Realidad talked about the experiences of Latinx adolescents in GA from their point of view. Thank you Sophia and the youth behind @nuestrarealidad.production for directing and sharing this beautiful film.

-Con Permiso tells the story of a 7 year old searching for her mother on Buford Hwy after school as she navigates the tense policing in the neighborhood. Thank you to the producers and @presencia_atl leader Katie Garduño for representing!

-La Orquesta highlighted the powerful work of Juana Alzaga and the Buford Highway Orchestra Program at @welovebuhi to bring music education and empowerment to the immigrant and Latinx community of Buford Hwy.

We also had organizers and teachers from Escuelitas and @atl.are represent their organizing with families and teachers on Buford Highway to confront the ICE age we're living.

Yesterday, ATL ARE teacher organizers Vivian and Jona attended the superintendent and community meeting hosted by Juana Alzaga from the @welovebuhi Orchestra Program to speak on community issues alongside parents in the Buford Highway community.

Many parent leaders raised concerns about safety, drug use, and teacher effectiveness for our English language learners, students with disabilities and Latino students. ARE Organizer Jona asked about what guarantees the district is making to ensure equitable resources and funding, including for teacher training, follow students that need it even if attendance zones get redrawn and student populations get more diverse (whiter and wealthier) in area schools.

ARE organizer Vivian commended the school board and superintendent for agreeing to draft a policy proposal for a Safe Schools to Learn policy to protect our immigrant students. However, she challenged the school board to do more by way of enforcing a shift to culturally responsive teaching to support our students in their academic success and identity development as well as to improve cultural competence among teachers to serve our children respectfully, equitably, and compassionately. by @atl.are

ATL ARE parent and teacher organizers and our ARE hij@s went with various organizations to the April 20 DeKalb County Schools school board meeting. We reminded the school board and superintendent that we are waiting for a response regarding ICE protections and teacher trainings to protect our kids and families. Our communities, especially those on Buford Highway and in Clarkston, deserve #SafeSpacesToLearn free from fear and terror as ICE devastates our neighborhoods and school communities.

We were joined by Safe Spaces to Learn coalition compas from ATL @casa4all, Women Watch Afrika, @indivisiblegeorgia, @demolabsouth, @georgiaaapihub and many other DeKalb moms and advocates to put pressure for our Safe Spaces policy to be decided in the policy committee!

Ms. Glory from Women Watch Afrika gave public comment to remind the school board that our lives and DeKalb students’ are constantly in danger of agents in uniform that target our families. We need protections now to guarantee our safety. by @atl.are

ATL ARE organizer Dami has been building power with DeKalb County moms to grow their advocacy for their children. Thank you to ATL @casa4all for helping our Concilio de Madres be ready to stand up for their kids at the 4/20 school board meeting.

ATL ARE caught up with our concilio de madres to strategize together for our demands to have DeKalb County Schools protect our children from ICE terror. We discussed the potential coalitions and actions we can take to achieve our demands for equity and safety for Latino, Indigenous Maya, and immigrant families. But before we talked strategy and updates, our parent organizer Dami planned an Easter celebration with the ARE babies and jóvenes.

Yesterday, members of ATL ARE’s concilio de madres, leaders of the comité de maestres, and our chairs along with members of our coalition from @casa4all and @demolabsouth met with the DeKalb County Schools superintendent’s cabinet to elaborate on our demands and solutions to protect our immigrant families and students from ICE violence and kidnappings. We also pushed for demands related to recruitment and retention of Latinx and Indigenous teachers and interpreters and communication with our communities in their languages to address their concerns and rights in the school system.

Our parent leaders and teachers shared testimonies of how ICE is destroying the stability of families by kidnapping parents and the adverse impact on mental health and academic success of our community’s children. Policy language and concrete solutions were presented to the Superintendent’s team to consider and implement to keep our children safe.

We hope to continue collaborating with leaders in our district and we will hold them accountable for the safety and wellbeing of our gente and community. by @atl.are

TA- DA! Un cafecito, un pancito and community working together!

Today A.R.E. organizers met with @casa4all organizers, Buford Highway parents, and teachers from @escuelitasonbuhi to celebrate the launch of our campaign to build safer schools for Latine, Indigenous, and immigrant students and families in DeKalb County Schools. We shared our organizing stories and the issues that matter to our community on Buford Highway.

The road is long, but the moms and educators of ARE ATL and Escuelitas hope to keep fighting for the schools our kids deserve. by @atl.are

Yesterday, the new Atlanta chapter of the Association of Raza Educators (ARE) along with support from groups like @escuelitasonbuhi, @casainaction_org , @vecinosbufordhighway , @splcenter , @glahr.ga , and more, launched a campaign to get DeKalb County District to protect our children and families from the fascist ICE forces and to build equity for Latinx, Indigenous, and migrant students and families in our schools.

We were joined by parents, teachers, university professors, students, community organizers and organizations to say BASTA! We need change NOW!

Thank you to our organizers and community members for packing the school board meeting and giving testimony about the harm that ICE and the school district’s silence is causing our children. In the words of our parent organizer, Karen, “If change doesn’t come, we will keep coming back!”
