Tucked between Los Angeles's Little Armenia and Los Feliz, ATLA (@atla_works) is quietly reshaping what an art gallery can look like.

Founded by artist and ceramicist Jenny Hata Blumenfield (@ablueandwhite) and music exec and curator Ryu Takahashi, the space weaves their divergent creative backgrounds into a cohesive vision rooted in reverence—for high craft, community, and traditions new and old. With physical roots in Los Angeles and a deep cultural kinship with Tokyo, ATLA was born from a desire to honor overlooked artistry, celebrate the quiet endurance of crafted savoir-faire, and create an intergenerational, intercultural dialogue that flows freely across the Pacific.

CULTURED sat down with the creative pair to learn more about their approach to curating exhibits at ATLA, working together as a married couple, and more. Tap the link in bio to read the full conversation. by @atla_works

Join ALTA (@atla_works) co-founder Jenny Blumenfield (@ablueandwhite) as she details the gallery’s two-person booth at Independent (@@independent_hq) featuring Japan-based artists Kuniko Kinoto and Yoshinazu Tanaka.

Kinoto is a ceramic sculptor “whose practice traces the shifting boundary between natural phenomena and human intervention.” On the other hand, Tanaka’s (@yoshikazutanaka_ceramics) ceramic practice “explores transformation, rebirth, and the cycles of decay and regeneration. Centered on sculptural form rather than function, Tanaka breaks down old, abandoned, or failed ceramic sculptures and reconstructs them into newly imagined forms.”

Shun Kadohashi’s surfaces and forms have this wonderful feeling of being kissed by the Japanese sun.

Based in the coastal village of Shirahama, Japan, Shun spends much of his days moving between his studio and the ocean, where he works as a fisherman. There’s something wonderfully direct about the way those two worlds meet in his work—the salt air, sun, water, ash, and the marks of the hand all seem to find their way onto the surface.

He makes his work slowly, close to the rhythms of the place he calls home—and, quite literally, with one foot in the studio and the other in the sea.

A quietly important show opened this past weekend, and a significant moment in Amia Yokoyama’s practice: her solo presentation at the ICA, alongside Carl Cheng, curated by Amanda Sroka.

Ambitious, fearless, and genuinely searching work deserves to be met with ambition of its own. Amia’s practice is a powerful example of what becomes possible when an artist follows curiosity without prescribing its destination. Her work is intellectually rigorous, formally adventurous, and deeply committed to the possibilities of looking.

The dialogue between Amia’s work and Carl Cheng’s across the two spaces is extraordinary. To bring two distinct practices into such a precise, unexpected, and genuinely mind-bending conversation is a serious curatorial achievement.

This is the kind of work and thinking that makes Los Angeles such an important place for contemporary art—and exactly the kind of risk-taking we believe in at ATLA.

Very proud to be working with Amia, and very excited to see this presentation take its place in Los Angeles.

There’s five months to see it. Please make the time. On view through February 28, 2027 by @atla_works

A quiet life by the sea. A visit to Shun Kadohashi’s studio in the costal village of Shirahama, Japan, on the peninsula east of Tokyo—where the ocean is never far from the conversation.

Working between clay, fire, and the rhythms of the sea, Kadohashi’s sculptures carry a deep sense of place… one shaped by the landscape around him, and by a life lived close to the water.

This September 19th, a little piece of Boso makes its way to Los Angeles for The Poetics of Place, a two-person exhibition with Vamba Bility at ATLA.

Poetics of Place: Vamba Bility and Shun Kadohashi

Both artists let materials carry meaning before words do.

Bringing together Vamba Bility and Shun Kadohashi, ATLA presents a two-person exhibition exploring how everyday materials can become unexpected forms of expression. Through painting, textiles, found objects, sculpture, and ceramics, their practices reveal how materials can hold histories, emotions, and connections beyond language.

Objects are never simply objects; they carry traces of touch, labor, landscape, and the lives they encounter. Across continents and distinct lived experiences, Bility and Kadohashi explore material as a vessel for memory, place, and connection.
