A quietly important show opened this past weekend, and a significant moment in Amia Yokoyama’s practice: her solo presentation at the ICA, alongside Carl Cheng, curated by Amanda Sroka.

Ambitious, fearless, and genuinely searching work deserves to be met with ambition of its own. Amia’s practice is a powerful example of what becomes possible when an artist follows curiosity without prescribing its destination. Her work is intellectually rigorous, formally adventurous, and deeply committed to the possibilities of looking.

The dialogue between Amia’s work and Carl Cheng’s across the two spaces is extraordinary. To bring two distinct practices into such a precise, unexpected, and genuinely mind-bending conversation is a serious curatorial achievement.

This is the kind of work and thinking that makes Los Angeles such an important place for contemporary art—and exactly the kind of risk-taking we believe in at ATLA.

Very proud to be working with Amia, and very excited to see this presentation take its place in Los Angeles.

There’s five months to see it. Please make the time. On view through February 28, 2027

Vamba Bility, one of my favorite artists, has a show coming up in Los Angeles. Please try to go. The work, like music, ignites your imagination and tells stories that stay with you. The work also adds taste, beauty, dimension, and sophistication to your home. It looks terrific, too.

A really wonderful and unique new piece we just got by Yoshikazu Takanaka. Big thanks to Jenny Hata Blumenfield, owner of ATLA gallery in Los Angeles. @atla_works
@yoshikazutanaka_ceramics
From ATLA - “Yoshikazu Tanaka (b. 1983, Osaka, Japan) is a ceramic artist based in Seto, Japan, whose practice explores transformation, rebirth, and the cycles of decay and regeneration. Centered on sculptural form rather than function, Tanaka breaks down old, abandoned, or failed ceramic sculptures and reconstructs them into newly imagined forms. Pulverized remnants are sometimes incorporated into glazes, while found materials such as glass, metal, and light bulbs are embedded in clay and fired, melting and re-emerging as traces of their former selves. For Tanaka, process itself becomes a metaphor for reincarnation and the natural, generative force of transformation”

What a fun evening filled with memorable moments shared with artists and JFLA friends!

The evening kicked off with opening remarks by Kaoru Kuribayashi, Arts and Culture Program Coordinator at the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles and curator of KINETIC STILLNESS: Sculptural Ceramics, and Dr. Michelle Liu Carriger, Project Leader of Tea Ceremony with Pacific Plastics.

The demonstration and conversation with Kenta Takaki, an Amakusa porcelain artist, offered a rare opportunity to witness his “Tofu” making process, and the evening wrapped up with a serene tea ceremony demonstration in the newly installed tea house and zen garden.

Both exhibitions will remain on view through September 19.

Artist spotlight programs are scheduled throughout the exhibition period, and tea house activation programs will be held on Saturdays.

Stay tuned to JFLA’s social media, website, and mailing list for upcoming programs and updates!
