Three months ago I had a manuscript and zero followers - still can’t believe we’ve made it real.
Last Saturday was the Atomic Parenting launch party, surrounded by the people who believed in it before anyone else did. Love you all ❤️❤️❤️

I sometimes wonder if one of the hardest parts of parenting is knowing when to hold on and when to loosen our grip.

Our children need us to be steady. They need our values, our boundaries and the security of knowing that someone is there, paying attention and guiding them. But they also need space to get things wrong, change their minds, take a different route and slowly discover who they are without us deciding it for them.

Perhaps that’s the balance we’re always trying to find. Not preparing the path for the child, but preparing the child for the path.

Hold the bow steady. Then trust the arrow. ❤️

In the early years of parenting, we’re very much holding the wheel. We decide where we’re going, when we’re leaving, when to slow down and when something feels unsafe. We steer because they simply aren’t ready to yet. But somewhere along the way, our role has to start changing because little by little, they need their hands on the wheel too.

They need to make choices, take a wrong turn, misjudge something, work out how to correct it and discover that they can cope when things don’t go perfectly. That can be incredibly uncomfortable for us as parents because stepping in is often quicker, easier and far less nerve-racking.

But the end goal was never for us to keep driving forever. It’s to gradually move across into the passenger seat and eventually into the role of co-pilot. Still there, still paying attention, still ready to guide when needed, but no longer steering every move.

Because one day, they need to know how to drive their own life even when the road is bumpy.

There’s so much learning hiding in the ordinary little things we do with children.

A nursery rhyme might seem like nothing more than a silly song with the power to drive parents over the edge when sung on repeat. But while they’re singing, clapping, counting and joining in, children are quietly building language, rhythm, memory, maths, coordination, imagination and connection.

And perhaps that’s something worth remembering in a world where we’re constantly being sold the next thing our children need in order to learn.

Childhood doesn’t need to become one long educational programme. Some of the richest learning happens when nobody is particularly trying to teach anything at all.💫

Sing the silly songs. Repeat the same rhyme for the hundredth time. Clap, count, make up ridiculous verses and let them join in. Their brains are doing far more than it looks like. ❤️

I think we’ve overcomplicated parenting, and the messages I receive from parents confirm this.

We have theories, methods, experts, podcasts, books, and yes, I’m fully aware I’ve added another parenting book to the pile 😂 But seriously there seems to be a new label for almost everything we do, oh and a way to do it better 🙃

And while some of it is incredibly useful, somewhere amongst all that advice I think we’ve started to believe that parenting requires a degree in parenting.

It doesn’t.

Children need adults who are kind enough to listen, firm enough to say no when it matters, and consistent enough that they know where they stand.

Will we always get it right? Absolutely not. Neither did our parents, and neither will our children when their turn comes. But perhaps we need to spend a little less time wondering which parenting method we’re following and a little more time trusting ourselves to actually parent.

Kind. Firm. Consistent. Then get up tomorrow and do it all over again. Parenting is hard enough and we really don’t need to make it harder. You’ve got this 💫💛

Maybe boys don’t lose their tenderness at all. Perhaps they just get better at reading the room.

The differences in how boys and girls express emotion are actually much smaller than we might imagine, particularly early on. What seems to matter more as children grow is context: where they are, who they are with and what they learn is acceptable to show, and that is what changes the conversation for me.

At some point, some boys begin to work out which emotions are safe in public, which ones might get laughed at and ridiculed, which ones make them look weak or are easier to turn into a joke, shrug off or keep to themselves.

Research into adolescent boys has found that stronger adherence to traditional masculine expectations such as emotional restriction is associated with less social support and more internalising difficulties.

So perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question.
Not: how do we teach boys to be more sensitive?
But: how do we make sure they never learn that sensitivity or moments of weakness are something to be ashamed of?

Something made me reflect on this over the summer, and it’s stayed with me. Being an educator is a responsibility I’ve always taken very seriously. We’re not just teaching children to read, write and count. We’re helping shape how they see themselves and the people they’ll become.

And as both a teacher and a mum to a son, I sometimes wonder when being kind, affectionate, sensitive or openly caring became something a boy was expected to grow out of, or a man had to defend.

We talk so much about what masculinity should look like, but perhaps we’re overcomplicating it. At least it seems that way.

I want all the children I teach to grow up comfortable with who they are. And for boys, that means knowing they can be strong and gentle. Confident and compassionate. Tough when life requires it and vulnerable when it doesn’t. None of that makes a man less of a man.

I’d love this next generation of boys to grow up feeling they have nothing to prove. Between the education we give our children at home and the one they receive at school, let’s make it happen ❤️💫

A bilingual child isn’t simply two monolingual children rolled into one. Their languages develop according to where, how often and with whom they use them.

One language might be stronger at school, another at home. They might know a word in one language but not the other. They’ll mix the two, sometimes so efficiently that an entire sentence requires knowledge of three languages and a bit of detective work.

And yes, they may understand absolutely everything you say in your language… and reply exclusively in the other one. Conveniently, their comprehension is often excellent when snacks are involved! 😂

The balance between their languages will shift as they grow. That’s part of being bilingual. What helps most is plenty of exposure and, importantly, real opportunities and reasons to use each language.

Books, grandparents, friends, holidays, films, silly conversations in the car, it all counts. Because ultimately, languages aren’t just something children learn. They’re something they live. 💛💫
