Most athletes are fighting a battle they cannot see.

The world teaches them:

You are your batting average.
You are your statistics.
You are your rankings.
You are your scholarship offers.
You are your playing time.

So when they succeed, they feel valuable. When they fail, they feel worthless.

But performance was never designed to carry the weight of your identity.

A batting average changes.
A roster spot changes.
A coach’s opinion changes.
A scoreboard changes.

God’s truth does not.

One of the greatest gifts we can give young athletes is helping them understand who they are before they ever step onto the field.

Your worth comes from God, not your results.

Your value comes from being created and loved by Him, not from what you accomplish.

When identity is rooted in Christ:

You can strike out without losing confidence.
You can make an error without losing peace.
You can be coached without feeling attacked.
You can succeed without becoming prideful.

Because your identity remains the same whether you go 4-for-4 or 0-for-4.

The scoreboard may define your performance for a day.

But it can never define your value. You are not an athlete trying to earn worth.

You are a child of God who happens to play a sport. Compete hard. Prepare diligently. Pursue excellence.

But never confuse what you do with who you are.

Rylee and her @teamsandiegohill were back together at the PGF 14U Qualifier in Stockton, CA. The girls went 4-2 on the weekend. Not the results they were looking for but a lot to build on.

Stats for Rylee: 9-19 (.474 BA) ,3 walks, 4 RBI’s, 5 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. She utilized her triple threat (Bunt, Slap and Swing away) all weekend.

Proud of you @ryleedonovan24. Keep working and having fun. 🥎

In the summer of 2022, my son Easton played in a baseball tournament in Cooperstown, New York with his travel ball team. We stayed with another couple, Tim & Beth for the week in a VRBO.

It was one of those weeks you don’t realize will stay with you forever.

Coffee in the mornings.
Baseball all day.
Conversations at night.
Simple moments.

One morning, I was sitting there drinking coffee when Tim came back into the house after going for a walk alongside the creek near where we were staying in upstate New York.

He said something that stuck with me.

He said he needed to get spiritually centered.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand what he meant, but I noticed something different about Tim.

He had peace.

Not fake positivity.
Not forced happiness.
Real peace.

He was calm.
Patient.
Joyful.
Steady.

A few months later, Tim and Beth invited us over for dinner. Tim showed me his office. One side was where he ran his commercial real estate business.

The other side was his study.

His Bible.
Solitude.
Time with God.

I told Tim what I had noticed about him ever since Cooperstown and how that comment about getting spiritually centered stayed with me.

That conversation led to him sharing his morning routine with me:

Prayer and a chapter a day to keep the devil away.

At the time, Tim had asked me about the 75 Hard challenge I had completed because he was planning to start it himself in the new year.

Then he challenged me with something far greater.

He encouraged me to read the Bible and asked me to send him my takeaways from each chapter for the next 75 days.

Looking back now, I realize something important:

Many people may never read the Bible for themselves.

But they will read your life.

Jesus shined through Tim long before he ever preached a sermon to me.

His joy.
His peace.
His patience.
His consistency.

Nothing was forced.

He simply walked with God.

When I look back now, I can clearly see the hand of God.

God used baseball.
A coffee conversation.
A creek in Cooperstown.
And one faithful man willing to quietly walk with Him.

Thank you, Tim.🙏✝️
