In our home we have two Bibles on display: Blaine’s first Bible, and the Bible that belonged to his grandfather. Both are pretty banged up from use, but I realized a few months ago that I was treating plates better than the physical Word of God.

But when I think about dwelling richly, I think of a twofold need for myself: I need to see it physically, and I need to cherish it spiritually. I believe Paul wants us to reframe our way of thinking about the Word, to let it become a resident and not simply a guest in our hearts. And when I think of dwelling richly, I know it means the Word has a place in my home too.

A richly indwelt heart produces a richly transformed life. The evidence that the Word has made its home in me isn’t simply that I know more Bible—it is that the Bible increasingly becomes the place in which I live.

“Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:16-17 by @aubschason

When I first began writing, I tried to stay as far away from what I was feeling as possible. I was so afraid that I would feel too much too fast after my dad’s death, so I dedicated my time spent with a pen to love stories.

Still, romance is my preferred genre to read, but truthfully, I love writing about what brings me pain. I love talking about my grief. It has helped, at least in part, to make even the worst of days seem less trivial, less lonely.

I have worked hard to reimagine grief as a kind of companion for myself over the last seventeen years, to take it with me everywhere I go, to let it sit with me at every table and among the seasons day after day. When I was asked to write a book about grieving, my image of it began shifting again—the process of it became something like a garden (a chaos garden, if you must know) in the midst of a valley.

I was inspired by Billy Graham’s words, which became the premise of Fruitful Grief: “Mountain tops are for views and inspiration, but fruit is grown in the valleys.” I began asking myself what kind of fruit grows in a desolate place, only to discover that life after death is nutrient-dense and full of God’s love and mercy, His kindness and tenderness.

He has been so careful and tender with me all this time.

So Fruitful Grief will be available tomorrow. I pray you read it and love it, of course, but more than that, I pray that anyone who opens this book finds that God is exactly who He says He is, and He loves you. by @aubschason

Over the weekend we hosted our college friends, and Blaine got to live in his house with his roommates, and havoc was wreaked and food was eaten and dead horses were beaten for hours on end.

The night they came in I served chicken thighs, pork chops, field peas, Mexican cornbread, roasted okra, mashed potatoes, baked Gouda dip, and fresh baguettes. Counting down the seconds until we get to see them all again! by @aubschason

Notes from my Bible!

Sometimes all you need for a successful study in the Word is cut-up clearance scrapbook paper from Walmart and access to @between_sundays_ on Instagram (and occasionally a well-spoken friend). It’s one of my favorite ways to be in my Bible, corresponding these quotes to verses and themes for reference later! by @aubschason

I am no handyman. I cannot think up an invention to improve your quality of life. And I certainly am no good with power tools.

But I can still love you to the point of creation.

I can make your wedding invitations. I can prep you burritos to grab from the freezer when you have a sleeping infant on your chest. I am excellent with a glue gun, scraps of fabric, and thrifted artwork.

I can love you to the point of creation.

I may never build you a bookshelf or invent something that changes the world. But I can build a life with you.

I can make traditions where there were none. I can make a meal, a memory, a place at the table. I can make something from nothing but time, tenderness, and my two hands.

There is joy in the making, and I will make my home here, with you. by @aubschason

CHURCH DINNER: Cowboy butter tilapia, ranch rice, Conecuh sausage, and garlicky green beans!

@kindersflavors cowboy butter seasoning is such a game changer for delicious and easy flavor (I especially love adding it to boxed potatoes). I also added lemon pepper seasoning to the fish for an extra kick.

Ranch rice is a church favorite, and so easy to make in the oven for passive cooking.

Lately Blaine’s been in the kitchen with me to help, so I ask that you keep him in your prayers as he has to put up with the version of me that’s the bossiest I’ve ever been. 🤪

Another dinner down, and unforch since this was sitting in my drafts for so long, it took up all my phone’s storage, and I have no footage of our dinner for tonight, which is loaded baked potato soup 💔 but I’ll be posting the recipe and photos on my Substack ASAP! by @aubschason

My weight has been the topic of conversation in pediatric offices, between boys and girls who did not care for me in middle school, whenever I needed a scapegoat to soothe my sad soul—and so it isn’t the topic today.

I haven’t addressed how my body has changed online, because there have been so many other factors at play. In years past, I suffered from depression and trauma of different kinds, and my health took a hit that affected all of my pregnancies and put my and my daughter’s lives at risk before she was ever earthside.

But when more people started depending on my cooking, it was crucial to me that I work for the Lord in this matter and eat with better ingredients that have had a huge impact on my overall health. And after the first 18 months of my daughter’s life, the depression started lifting, and so did the weight.

There are so many pieces that go hand in hand, and I know that my weight is the least interesting thing about me, but I feel very proud to be a healthier version of myself—in my mind, in my soul, in my body.

My go-to coffee creamer just got an extra fall boost!

Mix together:
1 C heavy cream
1 C water
1 C brown sugar
1/2 C pure pumpkin
1 Tbsp pumpkin spice

Simmer over medium heat until brown sugar is dissolved. Do not boil! Store overnight in the fridge and wake up to all your autumn dreams coming true! 🎃🧡 by @aubschason
