2 paper fortune tellers
16 short audio messages
1 goal: find out everyone’s secrets and deepest fears :)

At this year’s @xmtr.fm festival, I reached my final form: a woo-woo, tough-love-giving guidance counselor, most commonly known as a tarot reader.

For my first time contributing, I wanted to create a two-way interactive experience that feels like a safe space and a fun activity all at once.

I was inspired by my own complex relationship with prediction beliefs (and resent for algorithmic suggestions). I believe in synchronicities as much as I believe that you’re seeing them as such because your brain is looking for external confirmation. Sometimes a sign is reassuring, sometimes it’s stressful.

And so I decided to replicate the mechanisms of fortune telling, but using audio as that response to what it is you need to see (or hear) in order to move forward.

1) I’d start by pulling cards on a question for contextual framing, which primes you to view whatever guidance you’re about to receive through a certain lens.

2) I’d ask people to pick a number and colour for my paper fortune teller (statistical chance), which in turns allocates a numbered file, to be listened to on my trusty 2006 Nokia XpressMusic. A blast from the past, yes, my local electronics shop guy thought so too when I dropped it on the counter asking for a data cable suitable for that specific port.

3) But apt, considerig the guidance in question is 1 of 16 clips repurposed from a variety of archived old time radio shows. Recipes, tutorials, quizzes, fiction, house tips: any segment that could sound like that little voice inside your head nudging you to act. Faceless, timeless, general. A selection broad enough to speak to a wide range of situations, yet specific enough that everyone could leave with a different takeaway.

I was delighted to see that people were willing to ask questions about everything: career, life transitions, inner transformation, moving abroad, ghosts, opening up to love, closing off to love?!

Now I only remember the crazy pulls (you know who you are), but big thanks to everyone who sat down with me! A grand time was had 🫶

It’s been about 2 weeks since I got back from @hearsayfestival. If I close my eyes I can still see the bunting floating in the wind above the town center, smell the burgers sizzling on the grill, and hear the pub crowd‘s committed rendition of Creep led by @diarmuidmcintyre.

Like any proper hangover it’s taken me a while to piece together what happened but I’ve finally regurgitated my thoughts on paper.

In March I was really sick, but I was also writing my piece about networking hacks for @contentisqueenhq, so when @frantic.tea asked me to step and host a panel at their festival about 24 hours before the talk on a really cool topic obviously I said BET and immediately switched on my locking-in mode, which essentially meant raiding the ginger shot and meds aisle at my local Tesco, ordering 3 curries, Googling moderation tutorials, and then doing the whole researching everyone and putting together an interview script and making sure I don’t sound as monotone as French people do when speaking English and working on my poker face game so I don’t just react through facial expressions the whole time (that last part was really tough).
I woke up that morning heavily sleep-deprived with barely any voice but somehow feeling excited and ready and you know what? It happened. It went well? I made one joke. I plugged myself a bit. There were cakes.
It was a very good yes.

Anyway invite me to more panels please 🤍

No one asked so here it is: a sociocultural deep dive into listening bars/cafés (from an an audio-industry optimist’s POV) ✨

In honor of the final UK theatre screenings of @nickdwyernz’s @acenturyinsound this month at the @barbicancentre, I compare tradition to trend today!

Taking a break from panel prep to talk about the panel I’m now hosting tomorrow 👋

I was asked to step in for @soulsutras (absurd, very big shoes to fill) to moderate a convo about how to expand your podcast beyond the studio and create alternative ways/formats to connect with your audience.

I clearly love testing my last-minute, under-pressure improv skills, so obviously I said yes.

Jokes aside, this topic is my jam. My first job in podcasting (Paris, over 4 years ago, baby Eloïse era) was building multi-layer, multi-format content strategies around shows. I even wrote my MA dissertation on repurposing audio to give content a longer life and wider impact (what)

Now, working primarily on the making side (often on not so commercial projects), I’m pretty aware of the challenges of funding podcast work (esp while staying audience-first) and always investigating how extensions can support reach and sustainability.

So I’m genuinely grateful for the chance to bring this important conversation to life tomorrow, facilitating a discussion with people who’ve actually tested and trialled ways of building ecosystems around their audio and growing communities:
@itsacontinentpod’s Astrid Madimba & Chinny Ukata Ogunlusi, @peanutandcrumb’s Jane Gerber, and @theoutdoorsfix’s @liv_outsideuk. ✨

Come see them be wise and me attempt not to derail it with questionable jokes at Coin Street Community Centre, 1:30–2:30pm!

I wrote this article about how I’m feeling now that I’m back looking for work in audio. It’s the first in a series documenting my thoughts and the process of trying to build new paths in a more intentional way.

Writing has always helped me process my thoughts and feelings, and keep track of the things I notice. This Substack is a bit like a journal in that sense, just a very public one. Some of it might resonate or help, some of it might spark ideas or different ways of thinking. Really, I’m just sharing my journey and my opinions.

There are plentyyy of Substacks doing a great job covering the audio industry: podcast trends, listening recommendations, business growth guides, events etc. But we still rarely hear the producer’s perspective: exploring what we actually do, the conditions we work in, and the bigger picture/landscape surrounding it all.

More often than not, when we talk to peers about where we are or what we’re doing, we filter a lot of it through our public personas. So it’s kind of nice to have a space to speak openly about the honest, sometimes contradictory feelings, alongside the practical how-to of navigating the industry on an individual level.

This piece is a collaboration with @boundlessabound, who feature some really cool writers across the creative industries!

I’m back on the vlogs 🫡

During my July artist residency at @prisma.lx, I put together a little audio piece where I interviewed fellow residents about sounds in the city.

Voices (and some of the faces here) are @katinka_samuel, @camilovillastudio, @xtheodoreclarkex, @misschiif, @sunimkoh, @3velacharite, and @mantracoraart 🫶🏼

It’s called Sounds like Lisbon and it’s here (with bloopers included at the end) if you’re curious or if you wanted to hear it with headphones on: https://www.mixcloud.com/audioeloise/sounds-like-lisbon-prisma-july-2025/
